To try and make £10 stretch to 3 days meals for a family of 6?!

Ok so that title sounds impossible now I see it written down?!

We are saving for a house deposit - so technically we have money in savings so could dip into it but don't want to if I can help it.

I have £26 to last until pay day on Friday!

I need to put £10 petrol in my car to get me to work.

Can I make some very cheap meals to do lunches/evening meal for 2 adults and 3 children (also have a toddler but she eats all her meals at nursery during the week)?

Hit me with some cheap meal suggestions! I need to make packed lunches for 2 of the children for two days this week as well?! Is this even achievable?!

I also already have some things in the cupboard I.e baked beans, bread, wraps, frozen chips, milk etc

Ok I would do

1, Rice with chicken, onion and mixed veg
2, Breakfast for dinner, say egg, bacon, baked beans and chips
3, Use the mince, with some onion and mix veg to do cottage pie. If you have some potatoes.

And use the tuna in wraps for lunch. If you have extra eggs use them for lunch

Loving the chicken debate!Grin

Thanks to you lovely lot I have a bolognaise in the slow cooker for tomorrow's tea.

I've got some pasta and I'm going to make tuna pasta for tea on Thursday (and for lunch for tomorrow)

I've bought the stuff for the kids lunches now so they're sorted. Tonight we're having beans and cheese on toast! Grin

I really fancy doing the rice pudding recipe in the slow cooker too!

I'm going to meal plan for the coming month using this thread! The tips are fab!! Smile

Spanish omelettes with your eggs and spuds.. very filling, pad out with some pan fried mushrooms and tomatoes

Beans and cheese on toast in these parts is known as Truly Scrumptious because it is

AH the famous mn chicken !!!

Seriously tho yes you have the money if you need it - burn understbd why you don’t want to dip

but it’s 3 days

Pasta tuna
Omelette /frittata
Jacket pots and beans

And with the staples you have you will manage

Anything tuna tomatoey benefits from an anchovy fillet or two.

You can get small tins of anchovies for under £1. Chuck it in at the beginning of the cooking, it’ll melt away & knock some umami flavour into a batch of tomato sauce base for several days worth of tuna bakes, shepherds pies etc.

We’re a family of four (2 preschoolers) and I can absolutely get 3 meals out of an average sized chicken. MN star that I am.

However, it requires a lot of bulking out with veg and carbs. And if you’re trying to make a little money go a long way, meat free will always be the way to go, using cheaper proteins like pulses, eggs, tinned tuna and so on.

Risotto or nasi goreng would be the end game for my roasted chicken, then soup.

ivykaty44 · 24/04/2019 15:48

I’d rather forget the chicken and make

Chickpea curry 2x chickpea tins, curry paste and any frozen vegetables lurking in freezer, add tinned tomatoes

Frozen pea risotto with cheese (add in anything else lurking in freezer)

The cost of the above ingredients cover a chicken
