Obvious nc. Somehow my partner managed to absolutely decimate the poor condom. Ripped it to shreds.

I know how get the MAP but what I would really like is the coil, it's more effective and long term. Where do I get it from? Do I just ring up my GP and ask for emergency contraception?

I've never had to do this before because I've always used something, but we recently have had another baby and I haven't go around to sorting anything yet. Condoms were a temporary, and apparently useless, measure. Blush

Details of where to get at the bottom of here www.nhs.uk/conditions/contraception/emergency-contraception/

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 23/04/2019 00:57

You need to get an emergency GP appt & get the coil fitted within 5 days of having sex . x

CondomsAreCnts · 23/04/2019 00:58

I'm assuming it's only GPs that'll fit the IUD though?

GUM clinics will also do it, and you can probably get in quicker there. Don’t just book an emergency GP appointment without telling them what it is for, a standard emergency appointment won’t be long enough.

TurquoiseDress · 23/04/2019 01:01

Probably best to try the local family planning/sexual health clinic

Not all GPs fit coils or IUDs so you may have a long wait for an appointment

itsbetterthanabox · 23/04/2019 01:01

Sexual health clinics do too but it's unlikely you'll get it at such short notice especially with bank holiday.
You'll be better off getting MAP then getting a coil fitted at a later date.
Try to work out how he managed to mess up using a condom in the mean time..

TurquoiseDress · 23/04/2019 01:01

We don't know. It was completely ripped open, neither of us have any idea how because we both checked it was on fine. They're durex as well so not dodgy cheap ones either.

We've never used condoms until recently, I used to take the pill, so perhaps we are doing something wrong but as far as I can tell we did it correctly.

Does the condom fit him properly? Condoms being too loose or too tight can cause breakage and reduces the sensation during sex. It’s a myth that condoms are one size fits all.

I agree that taking the MAP is probably the best idea, if you go to a GUM clinic then they can sometimes sort you out with contraception at the same time.

itsbetterthanabox · 23/04/2019 01:16

@CondomsAreCnts
Yeah size and also are they in date?

startalovetrain · 23/04/2019 01:34

Go to the sexual health clinic, because it's emergency contraception they can fit it there and then. I did this and it took about half an hour from walking in to walking out with the coil!

ZebrasAreBras · 23/04/2019 02:19

You can get MAP from any pharmacy during the next 48 (preferably 24hrs) - which will alleviate the emergency.

Then make an appt at the gp for a coil , Just ring your gp surgery. you might have to wait a while - I did - depending on how many gp's at your surgery can put it in (mine only had one). But when I had it, it was practically 'no questions asked" - they really promote the mirena. They just want your LMP date and to put it in at a certain point in your cycle. I think you can't have sex for a week after it's put it, without additional contraception. That's from memory - it was years ago.

I have to admit the mirena didn't suit me. It stopped periods, but I had almost constant spotting/slight bleeding on it. I had it taken out. It was worse than having periods once a month.

LittleSprite · 23/04/2019 02:37

Call your local GUM/family planning/iCash clinic first thing in the morning. They should have emergency slots available.

It’s a copper coil that you need for emergency contraception, not a Mirena/IUS.

Raspberrytruffle · 23/04/2019 03:11

OP I suggest once you go for the morning after pill trying out the implant, its fab it goes in your arm and lasts 3 years and unpleasant side effects. I have really heavy painful periods and I tried the mirena coil it was awful I bled heavily for 5 months, I'd be

Out and about and would suddenly get labour type pains like my body was trying to expel it. I got it out after 9 months as I could stand it. My periods went from very heavy to really light it was bliss full

CondomsAreCnts · 23/04/2019 20:54

Thanks, I bought levonelle and took it today. We think the condoms were too tight as he always complains they feel restrictive and that may be the issue but I doubt we will be using them again.

The copper coil is the gold standard for emergency contraception. A CASH clinic should be able to do them as a same day appointment but you need to be quick off the mark phoning them.

Your GP may be able to do it, but it depends on their staffing and availability and whether they offer EC. Make it clear when you phone that you need an emergency IUD i.e. same day appointment. They can be fitted up to 5 days (120 hours) since unprotected sex.
