to have no idea what to do?

I need to do something that isn't work, childcare or housework. I hate the gym and go the wrong way in exercise classes (I run with my son and cycle with the dog, am active but too uncoordinated for classes Grin), I'm not arty or creative and can't cope with hangovers Confused.

So what am I supposed to do? I'd love a hobby, something just for me, but I have no idea what!? I could do with being home by 8pm to put my son to bed. I go to a Spanish class once a week in my lunch hour. Other than that I'm out of ideas.

What do you do? Help me reclaim my life!

Book club?
Amateur dramatics?

Parly · 22/04/2019 20:40

What do you really enjoy? Realise that might sound a bit basic and unhelpful but if you had the chance, time and option to do what you really do love - what would it be?

Coulddowithanap · 22/04/2019 20:42

I started volunteering for the fire service. We went to events promoting fire safety. Got me out the house doing something interesting and worthwhile.

Politics - are you political, or could you be? Local parties are usually a welcoming, friendly bunch, and it gives you a sense of engagement with the community. Or do you have DCs at school - school governorship? Or a book club?

kandykane77 · 22/04/2019 20:47

Parly that's the problem, I don't think I know any more.
Years ago, before being a mum, I used to do paranormal investigations, I even went as far as becoming a certified paranormal researcher. It was interesting but I couldn't cope with the lack of sleep anymore. I get little enough sleep as it is without staying out till all hours sitting in the dark talking to thin air Grin

I got an allotment. Outdoors, fresh air, seasonal fruit and veg. Plus if this year doesnt work out there is always next year. No one takes your courgettes into care if you do something wrong. You can do it at your own pace.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 22/04/2019 20:48

You do loads! Run, cycle and learning Spanish? That’s impressive in my books.
If you really need to do more stuff what about learning a musical instrument or developing an artistic ability? You don’t have to be fab to start off.
Or do you actually want something more social?

Waveysnail · 22/04/2019 20:49

Indoor Rock Climbing
Choir
Sewing - beginner class learning to make.stuff

Local colleges usually have lists of courses for learning new interest

Sparklesocks · 22/04/2019 20:50

Maybe if you can’t do the physical time of paranormal investigations you could do a research/study project on that area instead?

cariadlet · 22/04/2019 20:50

Have you tried yoga or pilates? I'm ridiculously uncoordinated, but really enjoy those and they're slow enough for my brain to process what I have to do. Running and cycling means you're getting plenty of cardio so they'd add a bit of flexibility into the mix.

If you're outdoorsy there might be a local conservation group looking for volunteers.

Easterbunnynearlyhere · 22/04/2019 20:54

Sign up to walkmydoggy?
Or a charity that helps disabled people with their ddogs?

LizzieMacQueen · 22/04/2019 21:00

You say you have a dog? How about flyballing, if there's not a class near you could you start one up?

If I was fitter I would definitely do this.

kandykane77 · 22/04/2019 21:23

ILiveInSalemsLot - it sounds like loads but I'm after something just for me. Running and cycling are both with 7 yo son and sometimes the dog too, great fun but I'm still in "mum" mode. The Spanish is nice, a 60 minute oasis in a chaotic week. Sometimes we just drink coffee and eat cake instead of learning anything.
As for social? Would be nice I guess, but not bothered if it's not. I'm a bit of an aquired taste shall we say Grin so find it very easy to chat and kind of hard to make friends.

cariadlet - not allowed to do yoga, am hypermobile and stretch too far, more's the pity as it sounds lovely and relaxing.

lizzie - flyball sounds interesting, I've got a fat labrador who loves to fetch Grin

GnomeDePlume - I've always admired people who don't kill plants. I can cook and eat veg but growing it is another matter!

Waveysnail - indoor rock climbing is actually really great fun, I took my son to an indoor bouldering place a while ago and we both enjoyed it, not sure I could make it a regular hobby (hauling my fat ass up high walls left my poor hypermobile joints aching for days!) but I might take him again soon. Good to do something different.

Hassled - not political, I was on the PTA until the treasurer's son assaulted mine, I dealt with the situation and ensured my son was safe moving forward. Kind of frosty atmosphere after that and I left, cba with all the bitchiness and frankly didn't want to see her face.

I like the idea of a book club, flyball, maybe a beginner's class at something, but what?
