Hope I’ve posted in the right place! Not that any tabloid will pick this boring thread up, but just in case- daily mail/the sun/all newspapers are shite rags.
I’m a single parent of 2 DC, working part time for a small company. 2 weeks ago I noticed my tax credits hadn’t been paid into my bank. I spoke to HMRC who informed me that my income for 2018/2019 was higher than estimated, so my tax credits had been stopped and I was no longer eligible.
I then found out that my employer had submitted my income to the tax office at 9k more than I actually earn! I’ve spoken to the tax office who have confirmed this, but I cannot rectify it myself, only my employer can by submitting my correct income. I’ve spoken to my manager, who had assured me that she will sort it out, but nothing has been done yet.
I’ve been into my workplace since this and no emails have been sent to the accountant (which my manager assured me she had sent). I’m not allowed to speak to the company’s accountant about it (no staff are, weirdly). The manager is quite lazy and gets distracted easily, and I think she’s hoping I’ll just forget about this.
I’m currently looking at a 3k overpayment which I’m assuming HMRC will want back pretty sharpish, and no tax credits to help. Can I not just submit my p60 (which has the right annual income on it) to the tax office myself?
Another thing to add which might be relevant, the company I work for are currently in trouble with the HMRC and owe them thousands. Is it possible they’ve lied about my income, and possibly other staff members income, to fiddle the system? I don’t know the ins and outs but it’s something that’s been suggested by a few people I know. I’m sorry that this is all very dull, but I’m panicking a LOT and hate having to rely on other people to sort things out for me. Any advice on what I can do? I keep asking my manager for updates but it seems like I’m getting fobbed off a bit.
