To make an emergency gp appointment

I was started on apriprazole and citalopram a few weeks ago. I don't know if it's the medication but my anxiety is sky high. I'm not sleeping and have been suffering terrible anxiety attacks since Thursday.
It's weeks to get a routine gp appointment at my surgery but I can phone in for an emergency one in the morning. I just don't know if it warrants wasting an emergency appointment. I really can't take feeling like this anymore.

Are you under mental health services? If so you'd be best to give them a call.

Passmeagin · 22/04/2019 19:01

I am yes but last time I contacted them they couldn't see me for a week. Unfortunately they're so overstretched

You would not be unreasonable but just be aware that tomorrow is the busiest day of the year for GPs after the 4 day break. Also what are you hoping they will do? I think mental health would be more appropriate.

Call a&e and ask if you can go in and see the mental health team.
A&e should have a dedicated team.
Hope you get help soon.

Absolutely not unreasonable.

OP, I am NOT a medical professional but I have been on anti depressant / anxiety meds and have been told by a number of doctors that it’s quite common for anxiety symptoms to spike a few weeks after starting. I would very much expect that the only advice you’ll get at this stage is to try and ride it out for another couple of weeks. Do you have any tried and tested calming techniques that you can use in the meantime to try and help? Meditation / gentle exercise etc.?

I work for the nhs why didn't I think about it being so busy tomorrow. I'll try the mental health team. I'm just hoping for them to review my meds maybe prescribe me something to stop the attacks and the constant anxiety

I have tried some breathing techniques I found on an online mental health forum. They did help to be fair. It's just terrifying. My heart beats so fast and I can't breath properly get all clammy and nauseous. It's horrible

Pass, I had exactly the same symptoms. I used to wake up in a severe panic and felt hordendous. I genuinely couldn't function. As the day went on I got a bit better but then I'd wake up with the same problem.
It took four weeks for me to see the difference.
I promise, it will pass.

Calic0 · 22/04/2019 19:30

I completely understand - it’s horrible. But it will pass and they’re unlikely to tinker with the meds yet if you’ve only been on them a few weeks.

Sorry you’re feeling this way Flowers

Passmeagin · 22/04/2019 19:32

Thanks for the comments. It's reassuring to know it'll likely pass. I'll ring my mental health doctor tomorrow just to see what he suggests. I imagine he'll echo pp and say give it some time
