AIBU to wonder what you WOULDN'T buy 2nd hand

Dp is currently wearing a pair of trainers that one of his friends gave him. Dd is also wearing a pair of trainers that she bought 2nd hand online.

I buy lots of clothes from charity shops but I'm really squeamish about feet and said that I would never buy 2nd hand shoes.

This led to dp and dd asking what I would be happy to buy 2nd hand. When I said no to towels, dp asked about hotels. Obviously I know that towels are washed and reused but I had never really thought about it. I had a sudden unwanted image of a previous guest using the towel in my room to dry their feet and crevices. I had a genuine physical reaction. It made me feel quite shivery and yucky.

I know I was being ridiculous and irrational, but please tell me that I'm not the only one. What wouldn't you want to buy 2nd hand or use after other people? (I'm assuming undies are a no-no for everybody).

I rarely buy anything new, but I check very carefully before purchasing, I work in a charity shop* and so many donations have just never been used. We also get lots of ‘new’ underwear donated.

When we had our DS we were given so much second hand stuff, I genuinely didn’t buy anything new at all, I don’t mind car seats, cot mattresses etc (so long as you know where they are from), my DS was in hospital for over a week when he was born and clearly sleeping on a ‘used’ mattress.

*Before anyone comments, I do of course pay full price.

Happily gave bin bags of bedding and towels to the local charity shop when I had a clear out. I asked before taking it all in and they were very keen. Hadn’t occurred that others might think yucky but in my defence it was all washed before donating.

Buy most of my books from charity shops and take back when read. Recent purchases have been an Art Deco fruit bowl, wooden cat door stop, boxed and brand new set of designer wine glasses. The thought of wearing other people’s drawers, vile. I can’t abide the thought of buying other people’s clothing full stop. Always convinced they had nasty habits and did unspeakable things in and to the clothing.

3 words.... fungal toenail infection yuk!
This is the reason I’d never buy second hand shoes! I’ve seen too many manly feet and thick yellow toenails out this weekend.

Candleglow7475 · 22/04/2019 18:38

Manky! Not manly!

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 22/04/2019 18:50

I've had second hand bras off EBay. I don't think they had ever been worn. I've had second hand shoes but only if they are in good condition and not as worn.
I've seen used make up for sale, I wouldn't buy that.

I don’t buy anything second hand (other than like houses or cars). It’s never really occurred to me. I don’t need to. I don’t need that particular ”ick factor” in my life

For most things, there is no like factor for most people. Why pay £100 for something that you can buy for £10?

RottnestFerry · 22/04/2019 19:19

ick factor

Allthepinkunicorns · 22/04/2019 19:22

I would never buy second hand underwear or shoes both for the ick factor. Also I don't think I could bring myself to buy a second hand bed or bedding as I don't want to run the risk of getting bed bugs. Other than those anything else I would buy.

CottonSock · 22/04/2019 19:24

Pants, vibrators, toothbrush.. 😁

clary · 22/04/2019 19:26

hmmmm underwear

Kids' shoes when young

errrr

I wouldn't be keen on secondhand trainers really but I have so,d them, so that's not logical. I actually won secondhand heels, the kind that don't get worn much. I have also had success on eBay with ds2's outgrown athletics shoes (he is a multi eventer so gas many!) - sold some track spikes for £12 the other week, cost about £35 new so we're all happy.

Ok with pjs, sheets, any clothes, after all you wash them! I don't buy masses second hand but that's due to lack of time tbh.

Can't believe the pp who said books! I buy second hand books as often as I can!

sighrollseyes · 22/04/2019 19:29

Mattress!

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 22/04/2019 19:31

Mooncup

Greenandcabbagelooking · 22/04/2019 19:33

Socks, underwear, anything to do with safety like cycle helmets or car seats.

Other than that, I'm not too fussed.

CakeNinja · 22/04/2019 19:41

I don’t think I buy anything second hand.
It’s not that I have a particular aversion to it but I buy things when I need them and want them straight away.
I hate browsing, am not into bargain hunting and trawling anywhere for a good price. I just want to choose it and take it home with me/get it delivered, aswell as having some kind of buyers protection.
We do have some stuff in the house that is very old and inherited from family members no longer with us.
I do donate unwanted things though!

Clothing: shoes socks or knickers.
