To take my toe to A&E?

Hi, I stubbed my little toe last night, it's wonky today and I'm not sure if I should take it to A&E, wait for GP to open tomorrow, or just leave it? I don't want it to be on the wonk forever but I also don't want to go to A&E if not necessary.

Anything that can be done for a broken toe or finger needs to be done ASAP so I’d go to Minor injuries today for an x Ray.

MirandaWest · 22/04/2019 11:12

Have you taped it to the next toe?

springtime12 · 22/04/2019 11:13

The treatment for a broken toe is to tape it to the toe next to it, so if you really want to avoid A&E then that's what I would do

RichSheffield · 22/04/2019 11:17

What on earth did you stub it against to be wonky today?!?! Sure it's not always been wonky?

Broken toes are normally managed without any medical intervention at all so unless there are any red flags just rest where possible and take over the counter medications. There's an NHS advice on the matter with the link below including some red flags for when you should goto minor injuries/A&E unit.

Thanks all, I can't tape it to the next toe because it is sticking out a bit too far

The wonk is definitely new!

Think we need a toe photo please.

Badgerwood · 22/04/2019 11:20

Oh, thanks for the link! Sorry, should have thought of that. The angle is weird and it was tingly but has now gone cold so I'll take it in. Cheers

I definitely wouldn't leave it behind. Wink

Sorry. To be honest I don't think there's much they can do with toes, especially little toes, other than tape them. I'd probably not bother going to A&E unless it was extremely painful and difficult to walk.

Daftapath · 22/04/2019 11:22

Definitely get seen. If the angle is such that it can't be taped to next toe and it's gone cold, sounds as though the blood supply may be affected.

Ilovewillow · 22/04/2019 11:25

I did the same last year and went in for an x-ray - it was broken in two places. It was trapped to the toe next to it and took about 8 weeks to heal. You have my sympathies!

FaithInfinity · 22/04/2019 11:25

Yes as Daftapath says, if it’s cold, the blood supply could be effected. Minor injuries if you have one with X-Ray, A&E if you don’t.

Badgerwood · 22/04/2019 11:34

I tried to upload a photo but my account is too young, but it's at about a 20 degree angle, bruise around the bottom with a broken black line going up it. Minor injuries it is! Thanks all

you could wait for a GP appointment, can you get one tomorrow? you will be back of the queue in A and E, expect an 8 hour wait and bring a book.

pbdr · 22/04/2019 11:44

Minor injuries is the place to go. No point at all going to GP, they would just send you on to minor injuries for an X-ray.

keepforgettingmyusername · 22/04/2019 11:48

YY to minor injuries. The units around here move much faster than A&E, for obvious reasons.

Badgerwood · 22/04/2019 12:32

I'm now at minor injuries, with a book and some crisps. Turn around is estimated at 2 hours so that's pretty good, most people around me look more injured though so am expecting to be last. Shame on such a beautiful day!
