Confused about Weed/Cannabis

Ok, I need to be educated about weed. I have a couple of friends who know their teens are smoking it. It’s causing them a lot of distress understandably. When I was a teen I only knew of resin. A brown lump that was crumbled into a roll up. Nowadays they are talking about trees, grinders etc and just wondered if this is what is called? How much is it, how often do people smoke it etc. Also, I’m sure when I smell it out now it seems much stronger than I remember. As a mum of soon to be teens, I want to be as knowledgeable as possible. Thanks in advance.

Branleuse I know people who buy imported very high quality weed because they like the strength if it

Most of what is sold to young people is stronger that is why we are seeing such problems within MH services that deal with young people

high quality strong weed isnt a problem. If its really strong, they just use less of it. Its not like a pill where you have a set amount and if its mega strong you might die. People generally smoke or vape until they get the effect they are after and then they stop, and then if its too strong, they fall asleep for a bit or spin out a bit in same way as if theyve drunk too much, but without the liver damage and risk of death

Branleuse

I've reported your thread for being level headed, reasonable and devoid of hysteria, anecdata, and personal opions dressed up as "fact". Poor show for someone on MN discussing cannabis. You know the rules - stick to them, or don't post at all.

Those links don't cite any details at all. Do you think they died as a result of being high and that led to an accident?
It is physically impossible to OD on cannabis.

I didn't say they died from acute overdose. I said those were the figures for deaths in which cannabis was named as a contributing factor.

Cannabis has numerous chronic toxic effects:

Enthusiasm I've wondered whether there's a link between more young people smoking weed, and the rise in poor mental health in young people. My DD works in a university, and sees huge numbers of students with MH issues every term. Every one that she's seen also has a history of drug use, or is still using. It wasn't all that prevalent in the 70s and 80s- at least, not in my area. And only city boys did cocaine then--but that also seems to be rising in popularity.

ExP smoked weed daily and has done for the past 15 years, he suffers extreme paranoia and is possibly the laziest person I have ever known. If he ran out and couldn’t get any he became irritable, short tempered and often verbally abusive.
I don’t have any experience of any other weed smokers but he was enough to put me off ever dating anybody who smokes weed.

Spraying weed with heroin GrinGrinGrin

Yeah, and they grow it in these giant tubs of knife crime, so when you smoke it, you get knife crimed right in the face Grin

@HarryTheSteppenwolf

There have been no deaths due to cannabis use recorded EVER worldwide.

Maybe those stats were heroin/crack etc use but they also happened to have used cannabis. So the cause of death was not cannabis abuse.

I know it can have some horrific side effects especially in the young users. I just don’t think it is helpful to spread misinformation about cannabis.

My teen son has been caught dabbling and I’m sure he still does now and again- what shocks me so much is how it is completely normalised amongst a lot of teens it’s just rife. Thankfully he’s completely against alcohol so that’s something I suppose.

It’s hard as a parent to know how to deal with this. You can come down hard, issue consequences, educate them about the dangers but a lot of the time they carry on but are just more sneaky about it.

My sons friend (14) was caught smoking weed, his parents grounded him for a few weeks and took his phone away. During that time he ate and ate out of boredom, now hates his parents because he’s gained weight and first thing he did as soon as he was no longer grounded was have a bong with his mates!

So hard for parents!

I've already posted a link to the number of UK deaths for which cannabis use was recorded as a contributing factor. For a broader picture see www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30925348

I am not spreading misinformation. I am providing links to official statistics and scientific literature.

Which is all very nice (not that many will read, and fewer will understand).

Here is a much better way to understand cannabis.

Most youngsters smoke Skunk weed now as it's cheaper and more readily available. It's also more addictive.

Skunk is the one with the very strong smell. & Most likely to lead to angry destructive behaviour, listlessness and lack of motivation, and paranoia to the point of seriously affecting mental health.

Sorry to hear your friends are distressed. IME Skunk smokers don't think they have a problem they think everyone else around them does, so it's very hard to get them to stop smoking.

PotsOfJoy · 22/04/2019 16:41

My mates cousin ate his own face off after doing reefer needles. Its filth.

user1471447863 · 22/04/2019 18:50

And there is the possibility it has been smuggled up someone's arse at some point.

There is more and more evidence that regular use of cannibis and in particular skunk strains are having and impact on MH. Many young people are smoking it regularly often daily

Our MH units are full of young men In particular who have suffered drug psychosis from smoking weed (a number have committed crimes - so there is a link in to death and cannibis use) and have long term MH issues. Would they have had its not clear cut but the belief is leaning more to they are far less likely to or their illness is worse than it probably would have developed and should they carry on smoking their MH often deteriorates even with mediation

It’s nearly always weed related with drug induced psychosis not alcohol, crack, heroin or cocaine
