To be angry about bin CF's

2 weeks ago DP came home after work to bring our bins in as they had been collected that morning only to find our bin and the lid of our recycling box missing. Both the lid and the bin are marked with our house number. We looked around where we lived but couldn't find the bin or lid so applied to the council for a new bin and a new box. Luckily these are free.

DP had spoken to a couple of our neighbours about the missing bin just in general conversation. One of these neighbours then knocked on the door saying they had our recycling box lid and that their son had taken it in error (it has our number on it so not sure how but we were pleased to have it back so didn't question it.) The neighbour said they didn't have the bin.

Luckily it only took the council a week and a half to deliver a new box and bin, however the bin is small and we are a family of 3, however we decided it would give us more incentive to recycle! The aforementioned neighbour commented on new bin and asked if it cost us.

Then tonight DP took out our new bin only to discover our old bin outside waiting to be collected. We all have to put our bins on the pavement as the council won't collect them from a private ca rpark. Our old bin is completely full and even has bags hanging off it.

We have come to the conclusion that our neighbours have stolen the bin to use as theirs even though ours has a massive 23 on it! and they live at 25. We are going to take it back tomorrow morning although we think they will take it back as we don't have a garden to store it in.

Knock on their door now and ask them for an explanation

Lauren1983 · 21/04/2019 19:24

Just to add we aren't 100 percent sure it was those neighbours however it seems suss after they had the lid.

We had this a while ago. New neighbour moved opposite and one day we found our recycling bin missing, and I assumed it was because we had a windy day that day. Only when we received a new one, the old one turned up on their drive, despite having our house number emblazoned on it.

I just took it back from their drive.

xsquared · 21/04/2019 19:28

Reclaim it anyway, if it is definitely yours.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 21/04/2019 19:29

Life's to short!

Lauren1983 · 21/04/2019 19:36

FiddlesticksAkimbo - I kinda agree however our replacement bin is much smaller and I do think why should we have to struggle putting our rubbish in that bin when somebody else is using our original bin. If we had been given a large bin I might have put a note on the old one saying they can keep it but not to steal bins in future.

Why is the replacement bin so much smaller? Definitely reclaim it. Maybe wrote on the smaller one that the CF’s at number 25 can have itif they are so desperate for one of your bins and then put it where everyone can see it.

Lauren1983 · 21/04/2019 19:46

I don't know why the bin is smaller. My mum (not a bin expert) said you have to state if you want a smaller bin which I didn't but maybe the council only had smaller ones?

Ha! that's a good idea GregoryPeckingDuck.

They haven’t even removed your house numberShock

I honestly despair at people today - if you are going to nick a bin, at least change the flipping house number!

I bet if you confront them they’ll give that wide eyed innocent look and say they hadn’t noticed.
If they are proper CF’s they’ll argue the sky is green rather than give in.

Cheby · 21/04/2019 20:38

Bike chain through the handle and chain it to your drain pipe or something OP. And I’d be up early watching the bins so you get out there first. Don’t let the fuckers get it back before you do!

wigglypiggly · 21/04/2019 20:41

As.cheby.said

Lauren1983 · 21/04/2019 20:58

It's just all so strange. If they needed a replacement bin then the council replace them for free, plus why have they taken a bin with a number on when most of them round here don't?

And if it's a genuine mistake (not sure how?!) where has their bin gone as there were no bins left after bin day.

I guess they think we'll be happy with the new bin and will just let them keep our old one?

That's a good idea Cheby. We are getting up early tomorrow and taking the bin and storing it in our garage but the bike chain may be a better long term solution.

Did you get it back OP?

Lauren1983 · 22/04/2019 15:47

Hi yes we woke up before the bin collection and went straight out and took our old and new bins in. We live looking over the car park and bins and as our windows were open due to the weather we heard the CF neighbours outside.

The jist of their conversation was that their bin had been taken (presumably meaning OUR bin). Their youngest son asked his parents if another bin was theirs and was told no. We then saw them wheeling a bin round. We think it must be another neighbour's bin but not sure which house it belongs to. I think they'll hope that neighbour will get a replacement and they can keep that one.

I don't understand why they don't just order a new one.

They are being v weird! Glad you got yours back though.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 22/04/2019 20:14

Presumably they saw you only got a small replacement one and want a big one so haven't called to grt one themselves, cheeky so and so!

Squigglesworth · 22/04/2019 20:17

Too lazy to bother ordering a new one? It's easier to just steal from a neighbor, if you don't have any sense of self-respect or shame.

Some people are so strange...

PlanBea · 22/04/2019 20:21

Where is the number on your bin? We have our house number on the front of our bin, and it has been taken by neighbours by accident. We've put a big number on the lid now and haven't had it taken since. It might be worth putting a number on the lid too?

JonSlow · 22/04/2019 20:21

Most councils are now only replacing with smaller bins as standard.

Spinnaret · 22/04/2019 20:30

Am guessing that someone's bin has been eaten by the bin lorry. If it gets caught, they have to just push it in for obvious H&S reasons. And rather than ring up for a new one, they just keep nicking others.

AnnieMay100 · 22/04/2019 20:35

Take it back and put a lock on it so they can’t use it even if they tried to take it again CF! Probably damaged their own and thought they had to pay for a replacement.

Hutchismo · 13/05/2019 13:22

Find out which neighbour has lost a bin this week and let them know where it is. Sit back and enjoy.
