Summer family BBQ

Please can I urge people hosting BBQ's this year take responsibility for those who have been drinking.
An accident in my area, hit and run has seen a mother dead and children seriously injured.
Rumour has it the young man driving had been drinking.
If nobody else steps in, please don't let innocent people die.

@canadianbanana glad you posted. I grew up.in Canada, and was pretty sure it was possible for the host to be held responsible.

I recall TV ads showing people stopping friends/family from driving when drunk.

Easterbunnynearlyhere · 21/04/2019 20:23

I was too scared of my exh to refuse to get in when he was obviously drunk. He nearly killed us all (me +4 dc). I reported him when we got home as he went back out - he was arrested and lost his licence for a year.
I filed for divorce.
It takes guts to confront a dd.

I'm from NZ, and while there is no legal liability there, it's strongly encouraged as the socially responsible thing to be aware of people's drinking, whether you're the host or just a mate, and if you see them looking to drive, to do what you can to discourage or disenable them from doing so.

Why wouldn't you? They could kill themselves - or worse - someone else.

Still18atheart · 21/04/2019 20:27

Yabu as sad an incident this is. You say in the op that it’s a rumour therefore how do you know for sure they’d been at a bbq?

Don’t base a whole reason and why around a rumour

WorraLiberty · 21/04/2019 20:27

'Rumour has it'?

AlexaMinefield · 21/04/2019 20:32

How awful. If its obvious someone is too drunk to drive its everyone's responsibility to stop it. If you saw them swerving all iver the road would you ignore it because its not your responsibility? If you saw someone collapse from drugs would you ignore it because its not your responsibility? If you see kuds getting abused i guess that's no ines responsibility but there parents too Hmm

Coquohvan · 21/04/2019 20:38

Canadian
It’s the same in France that the host can be in trouble if they let people drive after drinking and they are involved in an accident. God help them if it’s a fatal one.

RomanyQueen1 · 21/04/2019 20:44

When I say rumour has it, fb was full of comments last night from people knowing the driver had been drinking, I just meant it wasn't officially confirmed.
The driver is a young man, who didn't stop. I guess he was scared at what he'd done.

Ahhh fb the font of all knowledge. Hmm

Generally when I host, I say goodbye to everyone when they leave. This usually involves double checking how they’re getting home - not exactly hard! I agree with you op.
