People taking photos of someone seriously injured

I was at the beach today. At one point a coastguard helicopter landed behind the seawall for what was an obvious emergency incident. I later found out on the news that a woman slipped on the rocks and banged her head. Anyway whilst the emergency services were on the scene there must have been around 200 people looking over the seawall gawping and taking photos until the helicopter left. I was disgusted at the lack of respect people were showing someone who was obviously seriously injured. What is wrong with these people? I'm sure they wouldn't like a huge crowd doing this if they or their loved one was injured.

I fainted in the waiting room at my doctors surgery once (Blush) I was told afterwards that someone filmed it on their phone Hmm

senbei · 20/04/2019 23:03

Is it because they think they can sell the pictures to the news or something maybe? Or get their Twitter name on there?

Not even that, my theory is that a lot of people have been so desensitised to pain and suffering that it just becomes another way to get "likes". Much milder example, but hop on over to Instagram stories. Click through a couple of profiles and you'll soon find people videoing their arguments with their DPs, people filming strangers and mocking them for whatever reason etc. Call me a skeptic but it's all one big popularity contest a lot of the time.

Imagine being married to one of these rubbernecking sick fuckers 🤮

holly873 · 20/04/2019 23:26

weirdwonders you make an interesting point actually. The BBC actually put a 'were you there? Contact us' type of sentence at the bottom of most of their gruesome news stories on their website.

I actually think it's social media that is to blame though. I think by and large newspapers are kept to a professional code when it comes to publishing distressing images. There is no code of practice on social media. There should be though.

I think it’s disgusting & can’t understand why you would take your phone out & start filming. If someone did this to my friends & family I’d film them filming, one a lot of people who film others don’t like the camera on them.

ballsdeep · 20/04/2019 23:33

I agree people have become desensitised to it. You only. Need to. Scroll through twitter to see awful things. I was looking at something unrelated to isis the other day and scrolled past a sickening video which had people shooting people in the head! Awful

Smotheroffive · 20/04/2019 23:37

Everyone's a reporter now. This is what 'we' want is it?

Most people are doing it.

I was in a bad aircraft incident and whilst some men and women were screaming and crying others were stood up (despite demands to be seated with seatbeats on) filming all those in distress.

Human nature at its finest!

scaryteacher · 21/04/2019 00:18

There was a fatal crash with a burning lorry on a Belgian motorway. We were on the opposite carriageway. People were standing around, and on the bridge nearby, filming it.

supadupapupascupa · 21/04/2019 00:28

I don't think it's about the money from selling clips. I think it's more to do with the fact that people feel the need to document every part of their their lives. Every interesting or not incident is recorded and shared. An emergency situation would be too good an opportunity to miss, document and share. Makes people think their lives are interesting

Oakenbeach · 21/04/2019 00:33

It’s sick and wierd in equal measure. It doesn’t seem to be uncommon, but who are they? There has been universal revulsion on this thread so far. It would be really interesting to get someone who has no qualms about it!

Dontforgettheice · 21/04/2019 02:16

My DFather had a severe heart attack a few years ago and was put into an induced coma. He was in intensive care and couldnt even breathe for himself. Drs said we may want to come and "say goodbye" incase the worst happened and my DAunt (his sister) asked my mum if she could take some photos of him. My DM said no and that was that. My DF actually went on to make a complete recovery with no lasting issues apart from hes now more forgetful.

...went round to my aunts a few months after he got out of hospital and what was tucked behind her mantle piece clock? photos of my dad on his death bed.

Gingerkittykat · 21/04/2019 02:54

The worst I have seen was a video of a man committing suicide in a Scottish city when he jumped naked from a building while the police tried to physically stop him. The video surfaced a couple of days after his death and I was heartbroken at the thought of his family or friends seeing it.

Facebook refused to remove the video, and it was only after a friend who is a senior manager in a mental health organisation intervened they were removed.

The police actually publicly appealed for the people who had taken videos to be sent to them so they could use them as part of their investigation, but it is still very wrong they existed in the first place.

MitziK · 21/04/2019 02:58

My brother is dying now. Nobody else gives a shit, or they'd be calling ITU, never mind actually going there 'no point', they say, 'it's too difficult', so if I want a photo of my hand in his, I'm fucking well going to have one.

Gingerkittykat · 21/04/2019 04:57

@MitziK I'm sorry to hear about your brother.

Wanting a last photo that symbolises your relationship is very different from randoms taking pictures of tragic events to put on Facebook.

OwlinaTree · 21/04/2019 05:06

I can see people wanting a photo of the air ambulance helicopter. I can't understand wanting a photo or video of someone injured.

ch3rrycola · 21/04/2019 05:13

Not the same but I'm a member of a Facebook group for type 1 diabetics or parents of. So many people post pictures of their kids when they were so so poorly in hospital having just been diagnosed and so venerable and then stick the pics all over FB. I don't understand why they do that!

ch3rrycola · 21/04/2019 05:14

*vunerable

Nat6999 · 21/04/2019 05:31

A man has crashed his car nearby whilst dying of a suspected heart attack today, Facebook is full of pictures taken by local residents, how awful for the man's family, a member of his family may have found out about his death from Facebook. I honestly think some people don't have the sense to stop, they want to show off at such a sad time because they lead such boring lives.

Prequelle · 21/04/2019 07:38

mitzik really really sorry to hear about what you're going through. That isn't what people are talking about though. The examples in this thread aren't keepsake photos for loved ones.

HotChocolateLover · 21/04/2019 07:44

People just love to be able to say ‘I was there’ ‘Look at me’ They would have been uploading it to social media within 5 minutes. Saddos.

Figgygal · 21/04/2019 07:48

It's beyond me too
Utterly disgusting

BeanBag7 · 21/04/2019 07:51

It's very "black mirror" isn't it?

senbei · 21/04/2019 07:55

I've seen this posted on another thread before, and apparently, people seek these videos and photos out under the banner of "morbid curiosity". Then after that it's all demand and supply because people photographing and videoing it know they'll have an audience. It's really grim imo.

I mean, in California, there's even a death museum with photographs of the original crime scene of the Black Dahlia etc. Confused

LarryGreysonsDoor · 21/04/2019 07:55

I really don’t get this need to film something like this. What are they going to do with the film? Watch it back?

senbei · 21/04/2019 07:56

Post it on Facebook/Twitter/other forums to get "likes".
