I never knew that, math

Good Friday is so named because the word good used to mean holy.

Good has no etymological connection to the word God.

MariaNovella · 20/04/2019 18:56

In our house we are celebrating Passover, Easter and a DC’s birthday in one glorious multi-way feast: matzoh ball soup, roast lamb and spring vegetables and chocolate birthday cake and crème caramel. Multiple acknowledgement of traditions, favourite foods and the season!

Toddlerteaplease · 20/04/2019 18:56

We buy our ashes in from Hayes & Finch!

My cathedral is looking pretty stunning tonight!

Do I recognise Southwark toddler?

My church sets out collection baskets for old palm fronds and uses up spares from the previous year that are kept in the church basement. The palms themselves probably come from a liturgical supplier as they don't grow around here (upper midwest US).

During Mass on Palm Sunday I always watch as older Philippino members of the congregation weave very intricate crosses from their palms.

When I was a child in Dublin my parish used pine tree sprigs. The association with Christmas always puzzled me.

Sounds lovely! Is there an open invitation for any interested mumsnetters? Grin

Is now a good time to mention that today isn't St George's day?

OP posts:
TheFirstOHN · 23/04/2019 15:05

St George's day can't be celebrated in the fortnight between Palm Sunday and the Sunday after Easter. This year it will be celebrated on 29 April (Church of England) or 30 April (Roman Catholic church)

I love this thread.

TheFirstOHN · 23/04/2019 19:02

I'm glad my knowledge of the liturgical calendar is useful for something. Smile

I’m probably going to be struck down for this, but Easter Saturday sounds as authentic a religious festival as Black Friday.

But crack on with mocking people.

TheFirstOHN · 23/04/2019 19:48

Ali1ce the comment with the most mocking tone so far is yours... but thanks for the input.

Thank you OP for reminding everyone. Holy Saturday was also the day before one of the few (is it two) that large shops are closed.

I'd forgotten that the last day of Easter is Easter Saturday!
DP didn't know at all.

stucknoue · 23/04/2019 20:39

Easter Saturday is next weekend followed by Low Sunday. I don't know the origins of the name but it the lowest church attendance of the year at ours!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 23/04/2019 21:33

Is now a good time to mention that today isn't St George's day?

No, the best time would have been last night when I was trying to work out why my calendar has St George’s day as 30th April. Grin

Luckily as my family are not christian Easter Friday, Saturday & Sunday are now over, they come as a bank holiday weekend package, lots of chocolate, debauchery and fun.

Not to be mentioned again until the 1st of January next year.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 23/04/2019 22:16

MN has now reached the point where it’s answering my questions before I can be bothered to look them up. Thank you.
