Can someone interpret this sentence into plain old English for me pretty please?

It's in the context of a psychic reading. Not interested in getting into the ins and outs of that, just want to know what the sentence means as I don't understand it.

There is a deeply spiritual tone to your reading, almost esoteric, certainly powerfully archetypal

What does that mean?

Sounds like someone using big words to make them sound more intelligent than they are .

DonkeyHohtay · 20/04/2019 16:29

It's like that guy on Grand Designs - he's the master of it.

"Janet and Gordon have striven to construct their highly individual dwelling house in the local vernacular, drawing inspiration from the flora, fauna and ever changing shades of verdant colour in the ubiquitous British landscapes".

Hmm
Flyinga · 20/04/2019 16:33

I never said the reading meant I had a higher purpose. I've always felt that myself. Can't figure out what it is, but I appear to be here for some reason (several near death experiences). It's like I'm supposed to be here. For what, God only knows. Maybe a case study on general madness haha.

Flyinga · 20/04/2019 16:37

Every human has had some one taken from them, or vanished.

Yes, but the words don't indicate a death and it wasn't a death.

Anyway, I know you're all cynics here, so I'm not going to go into the ins and outs of woo.

What's the Barnum Effect?

Copied explanation from Wiki:

The Barnum effect, also called the Forer effect, is a common psychological phenomenon whereby individuals give high accuracy ratings to descriptions of their personality that supposedly are tailored specifically to them, that are in fact vague and general enough to apply to a wide range of people.[1] This effect can provide a partial explanation for the widespread acceptance of some paranormal beliefs and practices, such as astrology, fortune telling, aura reading, and some types of personality tests.[1][2]

These characterizations are often used by practitioners as a con-technique to convince victims that they are endowed with a paranormal gift. Because the assessment statements are so vague, people interpret their own meaning, thus the statement becomes "personal" to them. Also, individuals are more likely to accept negative assessments of themselves if they perceive the person presenting the assessment as a high-status professional.

So it's a bit like psychiatry then Grin

OP posts:
senbei · 20/04/2019 16:50

Psychiatry is an actual MEDICAL speciality that has a basis in science. Psychic readings do not. HTH.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 20/04/2019 16:51

It's more like cold reading, definitely not psychiatry.

DonkeyHohtay · 20/04/2019 16:58

You have to have a medical degree and several years of specialisation to practise as a psychiatrist.

Any old numpty can fleece the hard of thinking by calling themselves a psychic.

Flyinga · 20/04/2019 17:14

My psychiatrist frequently tells me woo shit.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/04/2019 17:25

The entire reading is uncannily accurate

Please tell us you're being ironic? Only a while ago you said you didn't understand it Confused

And BTW you probably weren't meant to understand it ... what you're meant to do is think back when something happens and say "oh yes, that's what she must have been referring to; how amazing!!"

Flyinga · 20/04/2019 17:28

If you could read, I said that I didn't understand that one sentence. Confused

redbedheadd · 20/04/2019 18:01

Powerfully archetypal could be powerfully symbolic.

So you could re-write it as

There is a deeply spiritual tone to your reading, uniquely special, certainly powerfully symbolic

Basically you are special 😂

Flyinga · 20/04/2019 18:15

Heehee

Oh I'm special alright!

iklboo · 20/04/2019 18:33

It you found it interesting & comforting OP then that's all that matters.

eurochick · 20/04/2019 18:46

I can translate it. It means:

"I sense there is money to be made here"

DoctorDread · 23/04/2019 00:25

I have taken 'Archetype' in this context to mean jungian archetypes which hold 'spiritual' values in tarot and the like (the mother, the mage, the warrior etc)

70sWitch · 23/04/2019 00:41

It's funny, because I've often felt like I have a higher purpose than just living. Hard to describe, as I have a pretty shit life, but I feel I was put here to do something. I'm like the cat of nine lives and nothing seems to kill me. So I do feel that there is some reason for my existence that I haven't quite figured out yet. I'm aware how wooo that sounds, but I have questioned my existence more than once. Not sure what the point of me is, but time after time I seem to survive horrific things in my life

Isn't this the plot of "Unbreakable"?
Maybe you're a Superhero.

DeRigueurMortis · 23/04/2019 01:20

It means I'll give you a free word salad made of exotic ingredients that whets your tastebuds to make you come back and pay £££ my next concoction that's both fattening and lacking in any nutritional value but you'll think tastes great - and keep paying for more.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 23/04/2019 03:45

The literal translation is "I saw you coming love".
