To park in parent and child space?

mcjx · 20/04/2019 13:38

DC hasn't arrived yet, but I am heavily pregnant and really struggle walking from the car into my local supermarket. There are never any spaces near the door except P&C so involves a bit of walking to and from.

Would I be U to park in a parent and child space?

I personally wouldn't mind anyone in your situation using one.

PJLove80 · 20/04/2019 13:40

NU at all. I did in last few weeks, my heavily pregnant friend got stuck as couldn’t get into her car and had to ask a random stranger to reverse it out of the space for her.

Bohemond · 20/04/2019 13:40

I always did. Not because of the distance but because I needed to open my car door pretty wide to get in and out.

TyrionsNextWife · 20/04/2019 13:41

You’ve definitely got your child with you, so why not Grin

99calmbeforethestorm · 20/04/2019 13:42

Definitely park there.

mcjx · 20/04/2019 13:44

Parked in a p&c once a couple weeks back at Asda and got the dirtiest looks off a woman walking by Confused it put me off a little bit!

Isn't as though I'd parked in a disabled space..

Where I live, P&C spaces are also marked for pregnant women, I say go ahead!

MatchSetPoint · 20/04/2019 14:18

If you can walk around a supermarket surely you can walk an extra thirty seconds in the car park? the parent and child spaces are larger so you can open the door wider and get children in and out of car seats I wish they would place them further away so people who don’t need them won’t use them, nobody is going to stop you from using one.

PurpleDaisies · 20/04/2019 14:21

They should be spaces for anyone who needs extra room. Park in them without any guilt.

TheGoogleMum · 20/04/2019 14:23

I had to a couple of times while heavily pregnant to make sure I had room to get in the car! I was huge. I think it makes more sense to use heavily pregnant than it does once you have kids big enough to get themselves out the car....

Bringbackbertha · 20/04/2019 14:28

Nope. Much prefer a heavily pregnant woman to have the space rather than the 2 ignorant assholes I saw today.

Both pulled up and parked in p&c in the spaces nearest the door, both with older children (8+) , one person gets out to go into the shop. They could have parked in any number of empty normal spaces.

At least you were taking your child into the store :)

DanaBarrett · 20/04/2019 14:28

Honestly, when I was pg with DD1 I used the P&C spaces because the only way to get out of the car was to fling the door open as far as possible and kind of roll out! The first few times I spoke to the security desk, but they said I definitely had a child with me and not to worry.

So IMO YNBU at all!

Sleepyblueocean · 20/04/2019 14:35

Completely reasonable to use it.

m0therofdragons · 20/04/2019 14:45

Completely reasonable to use it but I didn't as I couldn't face the confrontation from some idiot. I would have cried as I struggled with spd.

Shootingstar1115 · 20/04/2019 14:46

I wouldn’t bat an eyelid at a heavily pregnant lady using them so yeah use them!

Damntheman · 20/04/2019 14:48

Go for it. When you're heavily pregnant you need the extra door opening space!

DramaAlpaca · 20/04/2019 14:48

Of course it's fine.

englishdictionary · 20/04/2019 14:51

Mumsnet generally finds this ok.

I'm baffled that you can walk round the supermarket but you can't manage a few extra yards in the car park 🤷🏻‍♀️

Spanglyprincess1 · 20/04/2019 14:51

At least your not the child free knobs using them because they are so busy and important!

Flockingflamingo · 20/04/2019 14:52

I dont see the big deal in you using them, they're a courtesy, not there by Law like disabled bays.

I wish they would place them further away so people who don’t need them won’t use them, nobody is going to stop you from using one.

Totally agree, in most supermarkets the p&c bays are nearer the store than the disabled bays. On a really bad day I've been known to park in them with my blue badge.

Flockingflamingo · 20/04/2019 14:54

Sometimes those extra yards are the straw that breaks the camels back. By your logic we may as well do away with disabled bays because if you can get round a supermarket you dont need to be close to the entrance/extra room.

sewingismyhobby · 20/04/2019 14:56

@englishdictionary seriously?? Hmm
You can't understand how holding onto a wheeled trolley inside a supermarket on a smooth floor might make walking for someone in pain, much easier? Confused

Nah. Never said a thing about disabled spaces or people. Fuck off with that crap.

100% talking about this pregnant woman. Nobody else.

Just to clarify, I do not think this about disabled people.

englishdictionary · 20/04/2019 14:58

Yes. Seriously. I do question how a few extra yards makes a difference. Yes. So what?

Heyha · 20/04/2019 15:03

Surely the need to use P&C when heavily pregnant isn't the distance to walk but the ability to open the car door wide enough to get out without clanging the car next to you as you might do in a normal space?
I'm struggling to get out in some car parks now and I'm only 31 weeks. Far more need than someone with school age kids but nobody bats an eyelid at their technical compliance with the definition.
I'd walk from the furthest reaches of the car park as long as I didn't have to crush my bump getting back in the car at the end.
