Children's activity 'volunteering'

This is an AIBU but more of a WWYD?

My dc attends an afterschool activity, really enjoys it and I think it's very beneficial.

I received an email saying that I have to 'volunteer' to support the activity with a whole page list of duties to be undertaken on a rota basis.

I then received the rota and a contact list of all the people who attend any of the activities (not just the people who attend the same activity as my dc) with their home and mobile phones on.

If I can't do the date I have been given then I have to use the rota to find out which parents attend the same activity my dc does and then go to the contact list to find their number and ring them to ask them to swap with me.

My AIBU is that I haven't given my permission for my contact details to be given out in this way (so assume no-one else has either) and I don't really want my contact details out there due to being estranged from a family member. Obviously that has happened now and I can't change it but AIBU and WWYD? I don't want to unnecessarily rock the boat for dc's sake but also feel very annoyed that my information has been shared in this way.

Talk to them. Explain why this contravenes GDPR, what permissions they need to seek in the future, and why could be very problematic in some situations. You do not need to explain your personal circumstances or go in angry and all guns blazing. Just explain why this isn't okay. I would expect an apology and a change in procedure in the future.

Thanks, I suppose I'm just worried it will have an impact on how my dc is treated if I mention it. I know that's the sensible thing to do, I suppose I feel.a bit apprehensive about a possible confrontation.

It's really important to point out breaches of personal data. You might not be in vulnerable circumstances at present, but that does not mean that no-one is.

It will probably have a knock-on effect on how they arrange their volunteer rota, but as their current method is wildly unsuitable that's no bad thing.

Is it scouts?

If it does, then that's not the sort of place I'd want my child anyway. But honestly, if they are normal, reasonable people, it won't have any impact. Just talk to them.

I seriously think you need to go in and explain to them that they have completely contravened GDPR and it isn't acceptable and that not only do you not want your details publicised to a raft of people you don't know and haven't chosen to give your number to, but it is perfectly possible that others currently on the list don't but also future families might be in a position where they don't want it either.

Hopefully you won't need to, but they are completely in contravention of GDPR and if it came to it you could report them to the ICO.

Re the volunteering, presumably people drop off / pick up dc, so could they not be asked to sign up for a suitable week at that point ?
