To get a 9 carat wedding ring?

OH and I are having a very small wedding in a couple of months' time. Only two guests, plus our two DDs. We don't plan to spend much at all, but have come to a bit of a stumbling block when it comes to rings.

I don't have an engagement ring, and we were planning to get a couple of wedding rings second hand for around £50 each. But, now that we've looked into it, I've realised maybe this is unrealistic for a ring I'll be wearing every single day? Not wanting to spend too much, 9 carat is appealing to me, but I can't seem to find a straight answer online as to whether 9 carat is genuinely suitable as a metal for a wedding ring. Lots of sites say 14/18 carat is better, but not really WHY. As we're not interested in how "precious" the metal is, more the durability, I'm hoping some on here might be able to help us make a decision.

Has anyone on here got a 9 carat wedding ring? Is it lasting well? Do you regret not getting a higher carat? Why/why not?

I have a d shaped 9ct gold wedding ring, 25 yrs old now, and still looks perfect.

I've got a sterling silver band I bought from Amazon 9 years ago for £12. It still looks as good as new and matches my platinum ring perfectly.

Mine was cheap from H Samual too!

Have been wearing a 9ct gold wedding ring for 42 years. Still looks the same as the day I put it on!

Thank you so much everyone for replying. I was not expecting so many responses! I now have plenty of info for ebaying and auctions ahead of the big day, so thanks so much for taking the time. You've all been so helpful!

Congratulations - not only for your upcoming wedding but also this is the first AIBU i have been on that hasn't turned into a massive argument! 😂

@DantesInferno thank you so much that's really helpful! The equivalent of what I've got on is probably about twice the price which probably explains where we went wrong.

In hindsight we over complicated things as DH wanted to buy a couples set and have them engraved but his finger measures smaller than mine so narrowed the choice down massively, and then on top I had a very clear idea of what shape and size I wanted... we would have been much better off buying separately and getting them engraved at a later date when we were happy with them.

I have a ring that has a gold nugget in it (instead of a gemstone) is that 'purer' than 24 ct?

I don't know, possibly, if it's pure gold then yes, but Google says

Purity can be roughly assessed by the nugget color, the richer and deeper the orange-yellow the higher the gold content. Nuggets are also referred to by their fineness, for example "865 fine" means the nugget is 865 parts per thousand in gold by mass. The common impurities are silver and copper.

How Pure are Natural Gold Nuggets?
Natural gold nuggets are never 100% pure gold. That is the short answer. Natural alloys of various metals naturally occur with gold in its natural form. The refining process is needed to remove these impurities to produce gold bullion that is truly pure.
