McDonald’s job ?

I work freelance in a career I’ve been in for a few years but only been self employed for the past few months. I enjoy my career but as it’s been so quiet recently (not sure weather it’s to do with Brexit; although a lot of aquaintances have mentioned it is) and as I’ve been struggling financially I decided to apply for a job at McDonald’s.

I have no problem with working there - especially if it’s to feed my family; however after applying and having my interview and now suppose to be going to a welcome meeting and honestly I just keep doubting myself weather I want the job or not.

It’s not that I feel above the job. It’s other problems like the location of the restaurant I will be based in (center of our small town where I will see EVERYONE I know), the pay is now monthly (it was fortnightly up until a few months ago) so I feel like there’s not much of an incentive, the pay is drastically lower than my other job I do which isn’t really an issue for now but sometimes I am booked last Minuit for private jobs and I worry that if it came to a point where I was booked into McDonald’s and booked for private work; I would take the private work as it’s what I want to do and it’s more money. And I worry about how likely it is that I would be able to do so and keep doing so.
Also now it’s starting to pick up with my other work so I feel I will have more work coming in the next few weeks - again meaning I probably wouldn’t be doing much shifts at McDonald’s. So again I feel like it would be silly of me taking the job if I couldn’t commit to the hours.

Am I making any sense ?

What would you do ?

Ride out the quiet period for a few more weeks and then continue doing my usual job freelancing which is great when I have regular work coming in and when it’s during busy periods (spring- summer)

Or

Take up the McDonald’s job that has secure hours every week but means I would take a big pay drop and loose out on private work as I would only be ‘available’ on the days I’m not at McDonald’s.

I hope that all of you that think you’re too good for McDonald’s end up needing a job there and not getting one. So so up your own arses honestly.

CTRL · 20/04/2019 12:38

@apacketofcrisps sigh there’s always ONE Isn’t there. If you read what I and other posts were saying you would realise nobody is belittling McDonald’s - I am simply sayings it’s different to what I am doing as my career and I can’t see myself being happy there or necessarily progressing as it’s not what I want to do...how is that being on my high horse ?

Anyway thank you mums. I appreciate it and I will be looking at something else better suited to me and my professional needs.

Thank you again 💗💗💗

Can you afford to live off your salary from your private work or do you need the money to survive?
That’s what it really comes down to . If it’s manageable then just keep doing what you are doing .

I used to work there and now I can’t even get a job due to entry exam, it’s a lot better than it used to be!

A friend now works there pregnant very supportive was given pay rise in 4 weeks and is on training scheme, knowing she need a year off maternity leave!

DS is working McD whilst in 6th Form. They are absolute C**ts. No H&S , no accident book, abusive managers, keeping you past shift end until 3 in the morning - they know 'kids' wont complain.

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 20/04/2019 13:58

They also have zero regard for what hours you are available - eg you may put down school hours or evening and they will decided you are working at 12 noon on a Thursday, irrespective that it clashes with your school lessons - on the other hand they have their own work group where you can off up shifts you don't want and someone will always take them.

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking That’s awful and certainly not how the McDonalds company wants its stores to be run. I’m a manager there and have worked in several stores, both corporate and franchised, and have never come across anything like that.

As a company, McDonalds are extremely stringent on H&S and have very strict protocol in regards to it. They most certainly will have an accident book along with a hazard reporting sheet for crew.

What you have there is a rogue store. The BM doesn’t care and so the shift managers have followed suit. It is not indicative of working at McDonalds or them as a company and they would be horrified if anyone escalated such serious breeches.

StressedD · 20/04/2019 14:20

I slipped on a wet floor while working there. Hit back of my head, pain all down one side of my body. Shift manager didn't want to know, and when I mentioned about my head brushed it off with that he'd got a small, barely noticeable cut on his arm. Never got put in the accident book, and I wasn't even allowed to leave early to get myself checked out.
Staffing levels are often at the bare minimum for a shift (sometimes less), staff rarely, if ever, get to leave on time, and availability is ignored.

Amanduh · 20/04/2019 14:21

Mcd’s are a great company to work for. They regularly make The Times list. The one mentioned upthread sounds like the complete opposite of what the majority are like.
Op, you either need the money to ‘feed your family’ or you don’t. End of.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 20/04/2019 14:28

StressedD Again, that’s a management problem, not a company problem because they would never knowingly allow or accept any of those things.

StressedD · 20/04/2019 14:36

Actually, it is being knowingly allowed and accepted because it was escalated and ignored. Nothing has changed.

Sparklingbrook · 20/04/2019 21:10

Are you ok now StressedD? That's horrible.
