to be shocked that people think 100k isn’t adequate

We live in London (zone 2/3 so fairly central for families). We have a household income/wage of 95k-120k each year and it only varies because we’re both self employed.

We own our house and luckily don’t have a mortgage anymore, can afford for DD to have a pony, DS wanted to go to our local secondary school but had the option of the independent sector, as did DD who took advantage of it. We’re also very grateful that we can afford to go away 2/3 times a year (usually somewhere warm in summer for a few weeks, a European city break and Cornwall/Scotland). We also have a lot of savings and have money put aside for the children for university/adult life.

DH and I are by no means incredibly wealthy, just very comfortable.
However, I just don’t understand how people think 100K isn’t enough to live on in London comfortably. Many of DS’ friends parents earn less than us and still live lovely lives in the capital.

🙄

Get the reaction you wanted OP?

daisypond · 19/04/2019 12:50

I fail to see how 50 k is a medium salary for anyone , let alone someone in their early 30s. I think it’s a huge amount for someone of any age. In London.

SusanneLinder · 19/04/2019 12:58

Is it just me who's wondering where the pony lives in zone 2-3?! I'm imagining it lives next door to the OP, where they've turned the adjoining terraced house into a nice ensuite stable with all mod cons....

No, not just you. 😂. Maybe its in the attic. I still haven't had an answer to the Mercedes and the sauna though...Grin

I did see someone who had their pony in a very large council garden though.

Lucymumofson · 19/04/2019 13:00

Well done you 🙄

DevonBird9 · 19/04/2019 13:04

Wow.

woodcutbirds · 19/04/2019 13:04

DH and I live very comfortably in the Home Counties with 2 teen DC on less than half £100k pa. Because we don't have a mortgage Not having a mortgage changes everything.

We also don't have a pony or any materialistic urges for phone/car/kitchen upgrades every few years. But we do go out a lot and holiday and don't have to worry if the washing machine or laptop dies. All because no mortgage.

daisypond · 19/04/2019 13:21

There are several stables in zone 2 and 3, so I don’t think that’s odd at all that the op has a pony in stables. I quite often see people riding horses in my bit of zone 2.

spottycap · 19/04/2019 13:24

So funny. You don’t have a mortgage. What a wally

SusanneLinder · 19/04/2019 13:24

Btw, I am not slagging off anyone who has a horse. You don't need to be rich to own one. I know plenty of people who do on much less income than the OP.
It was the whole tone of the OP that made me...Hmm

JessieMcJessie · 19/04/2019 13:31

Aren’t they more likely to be people doing lessons/rides at stables where the business owns the horses though DaisyPond?

kbPOW · 19/04/2019 13:34

My ponies are in zone 1. Just sayin.

daisypond · 19/04/2019 13:35

No not necessarily. I know a couple of people who own a horse and have them in stables in London, people on much less income than the op’s.

FoxSquadKitten · 19/04/2019 14:03

Mind you we had to pretend to the nosy neighbours that it was a just a large Greyhound

😂

SilverySurfer · 19/04/2019 14:04

I own my home and there the comparison ends. I receive OAP and a miniscule private pension on which I pay £500 tax per annum No pony, no holidays, no car. I can't compete Sad

MODGNIK · 19/04/2019 14:05

Unless your pony costs £5k a month it isn't comparable to a London mortgage.

FiremanKing · 19/04/2019 14:53

I think it’s pertinent to know the size of the pony as that will have a bearing on the cost.

to be shocked that people think 100k isn’t adequate
Passthecherrycoke · 19/04/2019 14:58

Zone 3 is suburban and so is a lot of zone 2 south of the river.

However I’m miffed at OPs post. My mortgage is £1k a month and childca

Passthecherrycoke · 19/04/2019 15:01

Oops posted too soon

Zone 3 is suburban and a lot of zone 2 in South London is too, tbf.

However am miffed at OP. My mortgage is £1k a month and childcare is £1500. We have to earn £5k a month before tax just to pay for that (£60k a year) and that’s obviously before commuting, cars, food, bills, holidays etc. Our basic bills are another £1k on top. If we had bought our house more recently or rented the monthly housing payment would be far higher than £1k, and that’s not a high mortgage at all

Flibbitygibbit · 19/04/2019 15:03

Well done you ! 👏

KittyInTheCradle · 19/04/2019 15:09

I have a free house, no childcare costs and THREE ponies.

100k seems like more than enough pocket money to me, what are you all whining about?

Lol!

All these 100k threads are funny for different reasons. I think everyone thinks if they earn 100k they should have a pony or two. But guess what London rents are high!!! That doesn't mean you're not a really high earner though!!! You're just living in the London bubble. If you want more ponies you can go to the countryside and get a much cheaper place. It's quite obvious. It's also obvious that if you remove the extortionate housing costs you are mad rich!!

KittyInTheCradle · 19/04/2019 15:11

I'm curious now, how much is a pony? To buy, then to keep? I want a pony

ChopinIn10Minuets · 19/04/2019 15:19

The real question is whether the OP can afford a patio door big enough to accommodate a pony flap. Wink

FiremanKing · 19/04/2019 15:26

ChopinIn10minuets

Maybe he uses a regular door and has his own key?

to be shocked that people think 100k isn’t adequate
FiremanKing · 19/04/2019 15:28

That’s a whole new thread though.

‘At what age did you give your pony their own front door key’.

Or

‘How old was your pony before you went to the shops and left him on his own?’

Or

‘AIBU to expect my pony to not keep losing his front door key?’

SaveKevin · 19/04/2019 15:30

Are you hyacinth buckets sister violet?

Here’s a quick mortgage maths thing for you. A mortgage lender generally lends at 4 or 5 x your income.
So your 100k will “only” allow you to borrow 400-500k which is what an average family home go for in the Suburbs (and actually probably as west as reading / Basingstoke, east as Colchester, north as Luton) what I’m trying to say is Housing is the reason your ok and able to do what you do. 100k is far from an average salary, yet the housing in your area treats it as such.
