Along the lines of Whitby, Scarbrough, Bridlington, Filey, York, Harrogate. Where else is there that has attractions to walk around and is a destination in its own right to walk around and have lunch? X

ladymariner · 19/04/2019 09:42

Lincoln obviously isn't as far north as the others I said but it's maybe on your way? Well worth a stop.

Fountains Abbey and could then have a wander round Ripon.

MuttsNutts · 19/04/2019 09:43

Come to Durham. It has the cathedral and castle, lovely walks by the river, lots of places to eat and the locals are friendly Smile

Does it have to be on that side or would you cross the Pennines? Lancaster is a nice day out, lots of history. The castle is worth a visit, you can walk by the canal and have a look at the maritime museum too.

Do you have children, if so what are their ages?
Saltburn-by-the-Sea is nice, beach, valley gardens, little railway. Quite a few things for younger children. A few shops, and some nice woods to walk through just past the valley gardens. The cliff walks are great.
York is nice for shopping, the NRM is there, and it is nice to walk along the walls (if you still can?). Helmsley has some nice touristy shops, pretty, and it is near Rievaulx abbey. Castleton is small but there is a little tea room, picnics by the stream, lovely playpark, near to the moors centre. Lots of lovely little villages dotted around the moors really.

Skipton
Ilkley
Otley
Hebden Bridge & nearby Hardcastle Craggs for a walk.

Within the 'North' you've got the Peaks, the Lakes and the Dales. That's a lot of areas to explore.

Threefaries · 19/04/2019 10:01

As you are keen to walk round a town then places like Harrogate, York, Whitby are a good option. Oh, Layburn, nice touristy shops, by the Wnsleydale Railway. And Richmond, a fair few shops, walk by the river and castle.

Babdoc · 19/04/2019 10:03

Those places are all very far south from me! If you want proper “north”, come to Scotland. Edinburgh is fab.

Whitby, and if you drive along the 'coast road' to Saltburn then Runswick Bay and Staithes are nice little villages to look around with some great places for lunch, as is Saltburn. Going inland a bit so not on the beach but between a 20 and 60 min drive from the coast, Danby has a moors centre (North Yorkshire Moors) with stuff to do there, Great Ayton is lovely and Roseberry Topping is a nice walk up to a nice view on a good day! Stokesley and Helmsley also nice market towns 😊
