Not a child but I have a younger sister who we’re trying to persuade to do an apprenticeship. She’s 22, would she still be young enough to do one?

IceRebel · 18/04/2019 19:11

How does his wage compare to the NMW for his age?

What sort of apprenticeship is he doing?

Housewife212 · 18/04/2019 19:20

@icerebel. He earns 12k a year for 1.5 days a week work
And 3 days a week at collage

If he were at uni he would be earning 0k a year

The firm pay for his travel from and to work £60 buss pass if he were driving he would get 30p per mile
And his uniform I think he can get 50% on any books he buys for collage as well
He worked at Tesco pt when he was at collage and was on about £400 for 3.5 days work

He gives us £100 rent
Then gives me £400 I put that in my ISA he’s saving for a home

@Brodiebirdy I think it depends on what level and what sector many take up to 24

@Housewife212 get him a help to buy isa.

SeriouslyStrongCheese · 18/04/2019 19:25

I wish this was available for older people wanting a change of career. My husband is 33 and could do with a change of change of direction and we could afford for him to have a wage cut whilst learning something that would be higher paid. But he's not a fan of being academic and would hate uni.

IceRebel · 18/04/2019 19:25

I would get a LISA instead, you can put more money in them (4k a year) and get up to 1k extra from the government.

hsegfiugseskufh · 18/04/2019 19:26

Op id be inclined to say your sons been lucky (or that its a well paying industry anyway which it sounds like it is) Apprentices can get paid as little as £3.40ph. Which for a 40hr week is £7072 a year. Most wont contribute to expenses lile travel either.

A lot of places get apprentices for cheap labour, and whilst theyll get a qualification out of it some are more worth it than others.

Hollowvictory · 18/04/2019 19:27

What's the apprenticeship in
How long will it take
What is his long term earnings potential
I know a girl on an apprenticeship gets £25k (accountancy). £12k seems very low.

Housewife212 · 18/04/2019 19:28

@SeriouslyStrongCheese

It’s something we are talking to him about

I agree with this. Your DS sounds like he has been incredibly lucky to find such a generous apprenticeship. Whilst that's great for him, I wouldn't say his experience matches the majority of those who go on to do apprenticeships.

Nameusernameuser · 18/04/2019 19:31

Not to highjack but DP is doing an apprenticeship (we're only 21). Full degree paid for, £17500 a year pay, one day a week at college. Flexi working (amazing as we have a toddler) and work from home when he likes. £2000 payrise in september. Company car next year. AMAZING company, best thing that ever happened to him, I just like the fancy black tie events we get to go toGrin
He pays in £100 per month to pention, they pay in £400.
Death in service insurance. £750,000 life insurance policy.

Also engineering, but digital.

They want women and girls hugely. Any age. As long as you're keen and work hard they'll have you, but 2 lads from his team have quit in the first 6 months as it's hard work.
DP absolutely LOVES his job, and goes to work everyday not dreading it.

I'd fully urge anyone to do an apprenticeship!

Housewife212 · 18/04/2019 19:31

@PlantPotParrot this is we’re parents come in making sure detail is looked into agreed some are shocking but it’s about looking around and doing your research.
Not all sectors lend themselves to them and some really do

OP posts:
TeenTimesTwo · 18/04/2019 19:32

I haven't been able to find this out elsewhere, and to be honest I doubt you'll know, but here goes:

If you have to quit your apprenticeship part way through due to medical issues, can you 'bank' your progress so far so that if in e.g. 2-3 years time you are well enough to return, you don't have to start again from zero? (So not a 'break in learning', but a full stop, go and do something else, and maybe return.) Any links much appreciated!

hsegfiugseskufh · 18/04/2019 19:33

I wouldn't agree with that. Apprentices are workers and as such shouldnt need their parents to make their decisions for them. I agree that the person themselves needs to do their research.

Hollowvictory · 18/04/2019 19:34

£12k per year is about £2 per hour less than min wage

Housewife212 · 18/04/2019 19:36

Hollowvictory

It’s 4 years
He will gain a HND on top of his BETEC that he gained last year
And their is a full degree top up
Once qualifying he will be a technician then he will become fully fledged

He can expect to earn 37k-50k depending on department and experience

Bigorangenecklace · 18/04/2019 19:37

I don't think there is an age limit on apprenticeship jobs, Seriously Strong Cheese. Where I work we have an apprentice in her 40s, changing career.

Housewife212 · 18/04/2019 19:37

@Hollowvictory. He works 1.5 days a week you can’t really count the collage days because if he were at uni he would earn £0 per hour whilst in lectures

OP posts:
hsegfiugseskufh · 18/04/2019 19:37

Apprentice min wage for 16-18yos is 3.40

Housewife212 · 18/04/2019 19:38

@PlantPotParrot apprentices can be as young as 16 so personally I do think some may need some support especially if they have not had employment before.

My son did an apprenticeship in ict. Pay worked out at just shy of £6 per hour and work was 5 days a week and study in your own time. Worked out well as he finished the study months before the end f the apprenticeship. Gave him the experience on his cv to move into a job which pays well with a decent career path or if he decides to move on then it wil also be good for his cv. He is now 21 and doing great.

hsegfiugseskufh · 18/04/2019 19:41

I know housewife i was one!

Hollowvictory · 18/04/2019 19:41

Fully fledged at what though?
