Buying a travel cot for actual TRAVEL is a nightmare?!

I am expecting my first child June/July. We have holiday's booked in September and October and we travel A LOT to see family anyway, so I would like to buy a travel cot in preparation for this. You'd think this would be easy...

But I have found is so hard to find a decent travel cot that we can take on a plane! They all say " travel cot " but so many are bulky, heavy and huge!! There is no way people would take these to the airport. They're to have at your house or put in the boot of your car. What do you do??

Can anyone suggest a good travel cot that would be appropriate for a 2.5 month old to sleep in and logistically acceptable to take to airport and go on a plane?

I do understand they can be checked in - so it would need a decent case/bag that won't rip and ideally not be too bulky and heavy for us to carry along with the rest of our things. It would be amazing if one could actually go in a large suitcase.

I'm so lost! Please help! Thanks!

You need to search for a petite travel cot.

PotteringAlong · 18/04/2019 07:49

You buy one and leave it at your families house.

I seem to remember little pop-up Moses baskets, like the little tents! I’ll have a look.....

We had this.
However, found only going places with proper king size bed more productive as she often ended up in with us anyway.

If you’re traveling with a child under 6 months look at the koo Di pop up cot

Rodent01 · 18/04/2019 07:51

Little life arc. Packs down to a rucksack - it’s a tent style one with 2 poles.

Mrsemcgregor

They’re called Koodi now available in boots and Argos and dunelm etc - used to be made by a brand begging with s which I cant remember x

If your baby is anything like mine, you’ll but cots and travel cots and they will actually just sleep with you anyway.

At 2.5 months baby is likely to still be in the lay day flat but of your travel system. They can sleep in that at night too if they are independent sleeping.

Don’t buy anything like that until they actually arrive though. We could have saved a fortune not buying beds and prams.

StateofIndependance · 18/04/2019 07:52

You can get a Samsonite pop up one that works fine for that age. Another idea is to get a pram with a bassinet suitable for overnight sleeping and use this.

I found most places will provide a cot so you don’t need to take your own. I’ve only ever used a travel cot for staying at people’s houses and I just got a cheap 2nd hand one to keep at my parent’s where we stayed fairly often.

DocusDiplo · 18/04/2019 07:52

Wait till the baby is here

drspouse · 18/04/2019 07:52

The Koo Di ones are great.
Not everyone has a "travel system", we didn't.

DoveGreylove · 18/04/2019 07:53

PotteringAlong yes our parents have already suggested to buy travel cots for us to use when we go home which is very kind of them, but the main point is we need a travel cot for ourselves for when we go on holiday Smile I really don't like the idea of using cots supplied buy hotels/air bnbs Confused

OrchidInTheSun · 18/04/2019 07:53

I had a samsonite one which looks like they don't make any more but the Koo di one looks v similar

Elpheba · 18/04/2019 07:53

Phil and teds travel cot is pricy but super duper light and very compact. Has a zip at the bottom so you can comfort them with out having to lean over the top and will last a fair while. But also agree with just getting a big bed and sharing!

Bamchic · 18/04/2019 07:53

Sorry x post Mrsemcgregor

PragmaticWench · 18/04/2019 07:55

You'll most likely need a typical travel cot (of the huge, bulky variety) once your baby is crawling and standing up. The small pop-up ones work when they aren't mobile enough to rock them over.

Mrsemcgregor · 18/04/2019 07:55

That’s them Bamchic!

Mind you, didn’t matter what we did our kids wouldn’t sleep anywhere that wasn’t home and always ended up in with us. Good times.......

ZsaZsaMc · 18/04/2019 07:56

I think you’ll have to get over that. Just bring your own sheets and monitor etc. - you already have so much to bring, car seat, pram etc I don’t know anyone who takes a travel cot on a plane

DoveGreylove · 18/04/2019 07:57

Ooh the Koo-di travel cot looks great! Thanks! I will look into this as a quick fix for the upcoming holidays.

I was hoping I could find one that is suitable from newborn age + though, so we only need to purchase one for the foreseeable future.

We’ve travelled loads with a regular size travel cot no problems. It’s got in the hold fine and it’s no longer than a suitcase in the car. Our dc never liked the pop up ones.
I did have one of these bassinets when dc3 was little which folds down like a travel cot but small. But I’m not sure it’s available in the UK.

rabbitheadlights · 18/04/2019 08:00

I used a graco petite bassinett worked well and is smaller than an average travel

DoveGreylove · 18/04/2019 08:00

Elpheba I looked into Phil and Ted's and thought it might be an option for us- they even have a deal on right now where you get the bassinet option as extra - so we could use that for the baby when she's small in September.

Is the Phil and Ted's travel cot any good?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 18/04/2019 08:02

We travelled with a regular sized one many moons ago when ds was little,we just checked it in.

GenevaJoey · 18/04/2019 08:02

What sort of cot are you getting for everyday sleep? We have the chicco next to me cot and we just take that on holiday with us until they grow out of it. Then we have strategically placed travel cots at parents houses (cheap to buy second hand). Most hotels provide travel cots on request and when we visit friends they usually have one or borrow one for us. If we.sre.flying we would choose villas/air bnb that provided travel cots.

We do have a pop up tent type one which we have used for camping which folds down pretty small. At 2.5.months it.would be pretty inconvenient to have them sleep in it if you are getting up.regulay in the night and you'd have to lie on the floor to shusshh them.back.to sleep. You may have a miracle.sleeping baby though so not so much of a problem!
