I already know IABU and the answer to this is 'neither' but I love the area and we really need to move soon

2 options for a new house:

  • nice living room and kitchen layout but small bedrooms and no storage space
  • good storage options, better bedroom sizes but nowhere to put a dining table

Which would you rather???

Why is it that ironing isn't a thing anymore?
My partners work shirts would look very unprofessional without being ironed
Although when we have a garden, and things are put out on the drying line instead of being tumble dried, I presume there would be less wrinkles
I'm still so undecided as people have made very good points for both houses
Does anybody know roughly how much a garage conversion would cost?

Very much depends on your area and what needs doing. Is it just insulation and plaster or do the walls need structual work etc.
Try checking on local facebook group, they might give you better guesstimate.

SeriouslyStrongCheese · 18/04/2019 10:17

Neither. Find a suitable house. There are more than 2 houses for sale in your area.

bingoitsadingo · 18/04/2019 10:19

No way would I live without a dining table.

We don't have an ironing board. I iron stuff on the kitchen table with a towel underneath when I need to.

KittyInTheCradle · 18/04/2019 10:20

2 then look at garage conversion/extension in future

changeinmypocket · 18/04/2019 10:28

@InspectorClouseauMNdivision thank you I'll have a look!

If you have a garage, then you have storage!

I can't picture living without a dining table. Obviously we need somewhere to eat so that's not negotiable for me anyway, but we also use tables for everything.
All my kids have a desk in their own bedroom, but they still use the dining table quite often for projects, cards and god knows what. I think sometimes they do prefer being together, others they like their privacy and quiet of their own room.

At a push, we could use the kitchen table, but I'd hate it!

Of course many people iron Hmm not everybody has a cleaner who does it for them.

BarbaraofSevillle · 18/04/2019 11:05

No-one said anything about the cleaner ironing Hmm.

No ironing is being done full stop. In just about all cases, you can't tell if something has been ironed once you have got out of the house and travelled anywhere, hence is it is an unnecessary waste of time.

Babuchak · 18/04/2019 11:20

YOU might not do any ironing, but plenty of people do. I am not sure how it's that difficult to understand that not everybody lives like you.

Horsemenoftheaclopalypse · 18/04/2019 12:19

This would be the one for me every time
I loathe small bedrooms.

It’s nearly always possible to squeeze a small table in have a look at these

I wouldn't buy either, but I would be less unhappy in option 2.

changeinmypocket · 18/04/2019 15:11

@Horsemenoftheaclopalypse thanks for the links! Definitely would be able to fit something like one of those

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 18/04/2019 15:36

That's the thing in my eyes. It's easier to find a dining table/furniture to adapt to what you have than creating storage in a house not built for it or with enough space. I'm in a one bedroom flat and the amount of crap, including a table, that we managed to fit in is ridiculous.Grin

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 18/04/2019 15:41

I've got this one in black. The top of the seats lift up,with extra storage in each chair.

Babuchak · 18/04/2019 15:41

I would rather use the garage fully, and install full storage in it. It would cost less to buy ikea bits than going for a full extension.
I don't spend any time in my bedroom apart for sleeping, I'd rather have a bigger living space.

If you keep the garage tidy and clean, it can nearly be another room. (storage wise)

HappyDinosaur · 18/04/2019 15:47

I'd go for option 2 and buy one of those butterfly tables. I like a bedroom with space, especially for kids.

MitziK · 18/04/2019 15:53

Never mind that. What's the back garden like?

The garage is in the house with big bedrooms, storage and nowhere to put a dining table. Buy this one, you've got a relatively easy conversion at some point in the future and you can get a nifty tiny table to go in the kitchen or living room in the meantime. Small bedrooms and no storage will become a nightmare with small kids.

InspectorClouseauMNdivision · 18/04/2019 16:14

I think it really depends on..
What actually is a small bedroom?

And what do you use them for? I am with @Babuchak because I too just sleep in a bedroom.

Even if you are worried about kids having table etc, you can have really neat fold to wall ones.
It depends massively on how you use your space. Some people use bedrooms more than others. Some just go in to sleep and spend time in living space
