… to think that correcting people about the sex of your dog is idiotic?

Me to other woman at park with fluffy dog similar to mine- ‘aaah it’s so cute!’ Woman- ‘ACTUALLY he’s a boy. What’s yours?’
Me ‘um... female. Ok, well, must find the bin! ’ (Waves with bag of shit in hand)

Some things to say back I thought of later:

‘Surely it’s a man not a boy, he’s got a bit of grey in the muzzle!’

‘No idea what the sex is, never checked’

‘Don’t worry I’m not going to try to get them to breed here in the park’

Seriously though unless you are actively trying to breed dogs the sex is utterly irrelevant and I hate the fact that gender roles are so endemic that people try to push them on animals to the point that they get ANNOYED if you ‘misgender’ their pets.

I work with animals so pretty much daily I will say something like ‘he’s so cute’ and will be bluntly told ‘SHE.’ Before they sulk of somewhere ConfusedHmm

I always assume cats are boys. Probably simply because 8 out of 10 cats I've owned have been male.
Oddly my sister always called my old ginger boy Monty 'she'. Never offended Monty (or me).

If anyone ever refers to my dog as 'he' or 'him' I always correct them. SHE is my beautiful girl and she has a girls name, surely this is a big clue.

I can never be bothered to correct people when they get my dog's sex wrong. I'm not sure his sense of gender identity is particularly well developed.

Even his sexuality is questionable after he conducted a mutual humping session with a 6 month old male puppy Hmm

Apparently they do:

So they can. But apparently much less likely to as their libido is reduced.

You are making a silly mess of this.

People don't use 'it' for babies and dogs whose sex they do not know because 'it' is associated with objects and may appear dismissive of the baby or dog. People ask a dog's sex because they are making polite conversation and are interested.

I’d say if dogs being given genders is all you have in life to get worked up about then lucky you ..

My mum calls her male dog her 'little man' or 'my boy' and gets v upset when people assume he is a female dog.
But she also treats him like an actual human child, hand feeds him (he's over a year old) and dresses him in coats when it is a bit chilly so pretty sure she's lost her marbles!

I purposely refer to him as 'the dog' and watch her prickle with anger! :-)

Apparently animals feel the same about being misgendered:
