What are my options? I'm trying to stay calm but I'm utterly devastated at the reality of losing the tooth.

I had wisdom teeth out as a teen then lost one other molar in an accident. That means there is one molar by itself for years and now something is wrong with it. I'm shit with dentists anyway and terrified at all the pain to come. Six months ago dentist said it was ok, but it's not now, it's really sensitive and sharp shooting pain randomly happens for no reason.

I have a compromised immune system and not allowed to get implants Sad

Do any of you wear a bridge or what else is there? False teeth? I'm early thirties Sad

So so afraid of going to the dentist and the fucking pain and why is pain relief for dental pain so fucking shite??? They don't take it seriously at all am terrified I will be left for days or weeks in agony I don't know what to do.

If enough of the tooth is still good you can have a crown.

Hello. Sorry to hear you are so upset. You know that you must go to the dentist. They are very used to people with phobias. Ring them in the morning and tell them how scared you are. They won't think that you are silly. They will give you something to calm you. A friend of mine had a dentist phobia and she got diazepam from the doctors for it which she said really helped. I knocked a load of teeth out in a fall a few years ago. I was in the chair for two hours. The dentist and assistant s were so kind and sympathetic. Honestly, you will be okay. They will help you x

Can you put a crown on a failed root canal? I am terriified that a root canal will be offered first, and worried about the pain and then I know a very high amount of root canals just don't work despite all the pain. And also expense.

Am worried sick.

My dentist isn't great with phobias to be honest. I get so anxious i can't think straight at the time, and feel they think I'm making a big deal over nothing.

I understand you don't like the dentist, but you're massively over-thinking this. Root canals do work, pain isn't a given - anaesthetics work too. Call your dentist and explain your fears; they're well-used to it.

Knittedfairies · 17/04/2019 22:22

Missed your updates; change your dentist.

You could may be see about implants.

Freemind · 17/04/2019 22:27

Happened to me. Tried to save back teeth with root canal work, but all but one still kept getting infected due to cracks. Now have a very convenient plate to replace bottom missing molars on one side and no pain. Absolutely brilliant. I get very tense about the dentist, but he understands the childhood experiences that make me this way and is very calm and considerate and I know I can trust him if I feel pain. Talk to your dentist and tell him if the pain relief isn't working - he can add some more! I hope you get the same happy result as I did.

Ok, thank you. I think I need to ring around and get a different dentist in the morning.

I think I will have to pay. Does anyone know a dentist in London who is very patient and gentle with people like me?

You could try the dental school. I find students aren’t hardened to it all yet and are very gentle, plus they have highly qualified supervisors.

I had root canal which failed, ended up with an extraction, I'm terrified of the dentist, being helpless tipped back in the chair, needles etc. Tbh after the anaesthetic, not pleasant but I could bare it, the actual extraction was really quick and not as horrifying as I expected, time to put your big girl pants on, if I can do it, you can, the relief will be fantastic, be strong!

MoreCookiesPlease · 17/04/2019 23:45

Please try to stay calm. It might be that you need a root canal treatment or a course of antibiotics. But go sooner rather than later, OP. Don't put it off. The problem will only fester.

FadedRed · 17/04/2019 23:50

I had root canal treatments and crowns on two molars done in 1975 - really 49 years ago! They haven’t given me any problems since. One had the crown replaced three years ago, the other still has the original crown in place. So it can be very successful.

Abdul here is very good.
I used to be pretty fearful of dentists but he is very reassuring and has now got me over that.

Bunnylady53 · 17/04/2019 23:55

I had root canal work which I was dreading but it wasn’t painful, I just got a bit uncomfortable from having my mouth open for so long. I would suggest you change your dentist too & maybe try Rescue Remedy? Good stuff!

2toe · 18/04/2019 00:00

I too have a bit of a phobia about the dentist but had a root canal today. I can report it didn’t hurt at the time and apart from a little tenderness (tenderness not pain) for a couple of hours this evening it is absolutely fine, I haven’t even needed to take paracetamol. Find a good dentist who will put you at ease, the fear of going is so much worse than getting the treatment.

Niquitic · 18/04/2019 00:07

Most root canal work does not fail - I have had many Blush & none have failed.

I have complicated spinal & neck problems & ended up going to a specialist for root canal in Harley street as I cant keep my mouth wide open. I was in a supremely comfortable chair for 2 hours (dentist had a bad back too so invested in best possible chair) with headphones & my choice of soothing music & I fell asleep! Mouth kept open with wedges - ask your dentist or get them off Amazon.

Suggest your area & people can suggest dentists.
