Keeping wetting myself/leaking pee

DrCristinaYang · 17/04/2019 18:22

Previously had this posted in General Health however I'm reposting here for traffic.
I'm only 19 and this has been going on for almost a year now.
Even when my bladder isn't full small amounts of pee keep leaking out even if I cough or when taking steps etc.
An example of this is yesterday when I was out shopping and the whole time felt like pee was going to flood out of me, managed to wait with only small leaks. Eventually when walking home most of it came out and my jeans were soaked. Blush
This keeps happening to me, and every time I go out I'm worried about wetting myself.
What can I do? I don't want to visit the GP as I'm too embarrassed 😭

Ah bless you darling, I understand it's embarrassing but you need to head to the GP. My father was a GP and he had all kind of stories coming to him, trust me, this is what doctors are for and they won't judge you in the slightest. In the meantime, I would recommend wearing adult nappies as unsexy as that sounds, it is probably the best idea!
But definitely, head to your GP because this could only get worse with time if left untreated! xx

KillerSpider · 17/04/2019 18:28

Go to the doctor.
It could be diabetes, it could be a weak pelvic floor.
You don’t want to smell of pee. There is so much help out there if you start the ball rolling with your GP

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 17/04/2019 18:31

pls go go the GP - a friend's daughter had this, had a little op and now she's fixed

Drs talk about bums, wee and poo every day. There is nothing to be embarassed about.

Yogagirl123 · 17/04/2019 18:33

See GP and get referred to Urologist. No need for embarrassment, they deal with issues like this every day.

I am seeing Urologist at the moment due to on going bladder issues, they talk about bladder issues all day long.

I hope it improves very soon.

Sunandseaside · 17/04/2019 18:34

Go see your GP! They have seen far far worse I promise. Request a female GP if you feel self conscious.

Mumof1andacat · 17/04/2019 18:34

I work in health care and we have seen it all many times. We care and want to help you. Please go and see your gp

Cocolapew · 17/04/2019 18:34

I think I answered your last post, you must go to the Gp, it could be a uti it's easily solved with anti biotics.
On the other hand it could be something that needs investigated.
Don't let embarrassment stop you going, the Dr will not be the slightly bit bothered.

TreadingThePrimrosePath · 17/04/2019 18:46

A year?
Yes Dr, you are more embarrassed about asking than wetting yourself and smelling of urine, which is an odd sense of priorities. You need to find out the cause.
Use Tena ladies or pull-ups, get them from the supermarket or chemists. If you are embarrassed, pretend they are for your gran.
Pelvic floor exercises.
Last if all, if you are overweight, lose some.

Mabelface · 17/04/2019 18:53

Cut out caffeine and alcohol, then see your gp if no improvement. I had the same issue all my life and finally was given medication around 7 years ago, and I'm not kidding when I say it is life changing. Always do a good incontinence pad which looks like normal San Pro

ReSistingPink · 17/04/2019 18:53

This happened to me and turned out I had a UTI, no other symptoms but a quick urine test at the GP confirmed it. Antibiotics sorted it. Definitely go to your doc. They'll know exactly what to do and you'll feel much better than walking around wet or leaky. Best of luck.
(Just realised- You don't say if you are post partum, that could be a whole other issue, ask for a referral for post natal physiotherapy in that case)

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 17/04/2019 19:32

Look up the Pelvic Roar and and Gusset Grippers pages on FB - lots of good advice there about strengthening your pelvic floor muscles with exercises you can start doing straight away, with no special equipment.

I had this problem as a teenager, and solved it with pelvic floor exercises. It did come back after I’d had my children, and gained weight, but I have been doing the exercises religiously for 9 months or more, and things have improved dramatically.

Don’t let it upset you - it is not a rare problem, and it is eminently treatable and curable.

Candymay · 17/04/2019 20:09

Oh gosh I’ve got this too. I’m not even name changing either. Haven’t told a soul. It’s definitely getting worse and I haven’t seen a doctor either. I’m a lot older than you and feel so ashamed.

Please go to the doctor tomorrow. Ask for a female one if you would prefer. I’m sure you will have something treatable and the doctor will be happy to help. Good luck!

Aozora13 · 17/04/2019 20:13

I had this when pregnant and again just after I gave birth - both times it was a uti which cleared up with antibiotics. Do see a GP and don’t feel embarrassed, they’ve heard it all before!

StillWould · 17/04/2019 20:15

Go to the GP, there is nothing to be embarrassed about at all. Surely one visit to the doctor who will treat you with kindness, keep everything confidential and will help you solve this problem is preferable to wetting yourself and smelling of wee daily.

Make an appointment and stop worrying.

morallowground · 17/04/2019 20:23

You need to see your GP, it could be that your bladder isn’t emptying properly or it could be something totally unrelated but you need to get it sorted. You can’t live like this forever when a trip to the GP can fix it. If you’re really embarrassed you could ask for a female GP or nurse practitioner.

Your Gp will refer you to a urologist who can check what’s going on. In the meantime while your waiting to be referred to urology why don’t you buy some tennar lady (might not have spelt that properly) or any other leakage knickers that are out there. That way at least you can go out confidently that if you have any leaks, you’re not going to wet yourself or have urine smell. If you’re embarrassed you could always buy them online and have them delivered or go to the self service checkout.

I know it can feel embarrassing going to the GP about something like this but it seems a bit sad you’re causing yourself so much stress and discomfort when your GP is going to have zero weirdness about it. You’ll probably be the 6th person they’ve seen that week with a bladder problem.

HBStowe · 17/04/2019 20:26

There’s not really any option other than GP but please try not to be embarrassed - they see everything under the sun to do with bodies, it’s not unusual or embarrassing or weird to them.

Bambamber · 17/04/2019 20:27

Please don't be embarrassed! I had urinary problems in my early 20s and would alternate between leaking to complete retention, I had to self catheterise for a period of time. Not one single medical professional batted an eyelid.

Things like this can often be treated, surely that is better than having accidents? Please don't put it off. I waited to see my GP and ended up with fluid around my kidneys, if I waited any longer serious damage could have been done

2dogsandPG · 17/04/2019 20:30

See your GP!

Also, try the NHS Squeezy app - it's good for strengthening your pelvic floor and this may help.

Good luck!

Prequelle · 17/04/2019 20:33

Ah OP I'm super sorry you're going though this! I support women with issues like this and there's a lot of options out there for you if you can just access the help you need. Please see your GP and don't suffer in silence xx

bobstersmum · 17/04/2019 20:37

I had this quite bad when I was overweight, before I even had my children.

TwirlyWitch · 17/04/2019 20:40

Another vote for the NHS squeezy app- it’s made a huge difference for me. Hoping you go get the help you need.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 17/04/2019 20:44

I struggled for ages with this then went to see a sympathetic GP who prescribed me Neditol. It's like magic.

CustardySergeant · 17/04/2019 20:59

PLEASE see your GP. This is something a GP will have seen umpteen times and you will get help. Please just make the appointment, explain to your GP and the cause will be investigated followed by treatment. You can't go on like this, can you? Please take a deep breath and determine to get this sorted. There really is nothing to be embarrassed about at all.

MereDintofPandiculation · 17/04/2019 21:06

Cut out caffeine and alcohol, Worth a try - I was told to cut out tea, coffee, chocolate and alcohol for two weeks to see if it had an effect. I was so annoyed when it did! I now drink only herbal tea and decaffeinated coffee, and drink a couple of glasses of wine about once a week, and have gone from major problem to actually being able to run and jump, and even sneeze, with no problem.

Incontinence pads work better on urine than sanitary pads, but if you're embarrassed, use sanitary pads.
