To think I can supplement myself to health?

I have an horrendous diet. No point in telling me to improve it because I just can’t. (I’m autistic so not to drip feed). I don’t eat fruit and eat little veg (maybe twice a week). I have Ferratin deficiency anaemia (last reading was 4) and IBS so can’t take iron tablets. I feel like total shit all the time. Zero energy and look haggered.

Typical day -
breakfast - 2 shredded wheat
Lunch - pot noodle
Dinner - Kiev’s and beans.

I’m a healthy weight but that’s about it.

I’ve just bought vitamin C, B12, multi-vitamins and vitamin D. AIBU in thinking I can supplement myself back to health?

Honestly no point in trying to improve the diet so this is my only hope

Well when I've had anorexia relapses, supplements have almost certainly helped considerably. Can I ask the relevance of your autism to getting fruit and veg?

If you aren't getting fruit and veg then fibre is a massive issue. I'd suggest supplementing a fibre drink too, I recommend Lepicol. You can get it from Boots or other health stores.

Link to autism - might not be linked but I’m incredibly picky with what I eat, always have been. I can’t eat anything really cold or really hard. (So this rules out apples, ice-cream and steak) and I don’t eat sour stuff (like oranges). I also don’t like trying new food so tend to eat the same stuff week in and week out

Sorry there's no scientific evidence to support any health benefits to taking vitamin supplements. Can you make any modification to your diet at all? For example can you have home made baked beans with some blended veg in the tomato sauce?

Multi minerals too?

Have you had your Thyroid, Vitamin D and B12 levels tested at the GPs? Just thinking that if you have no energy you may have deficiencies that require heavy duty supervised supplementation.

It's supposedly better to get nutrients from food but, if you're not getting all you need, good that you are taking supplements.

How are you with soups? You can pack a lot of nutrition into a homemade soup.

You really should be aiming to improve your diet OP, a healthy diet can help prevent lots of disease and illness. Supplements can only help so much, and for lots of minerals and vitamins there's very little scientific proof to show they help. Much better to get what you need from your food.

Can you see a registered dietician or nutritionist to help give you some guidance and ideas?

You need to get your iron up, until that is the rest won't make much of a difference. Can you have a blood transfusion?

Wolfiefan · 17/04/2019 18:24

I would ask to see a dietician. That’s a very limited diet. They could offer specific advice.

I don't know where this is from but this is false.

I have a fast heart rate too (currently 100bpm) - side effect of anaemia? Not had a test for a while since it came back as 4 and the doctor said I should just take iron tablets 🙄

I'm sorry, but you are going to have to change your diet. Supplements simply will not work. Your heart rate and blood pressure will continue to go up with that diet. It is way too high in sodium and carbs.

Can you see a nutritionist and help you meal plan things that you will like? What do you like? Can you put banana in your shredded wheat? Buy actual ramen packets (not pot noodle), and add some finely chopped carrots to it?

Just try to add one fruit or veg to each meal and go from there.

Smoothies?

Strawberries aren’t cold or hard
