To ask where I could donate formal dresses to charity?

I’m moving house soon and have a few good quality (think Karen Millen et al) formal dresses that I am definitely a bit too long in the tooth to wear now, as they’re very short and I’m not as slim as I once was!

Does anyone know of any charities I could donate these to? I am based in London.

Just take them to a charity shop? Any charity shop! Take them to one in Chelsea if you’re being fancy about it?

That wasn’t meant to sound quite so shitty! Just a bit confused why formal wear is any different to any other clothes.

I had several full length dresses from Coast etc and I took them to a local charity shop.

St John's wood has several "boutique " charity shops

If they are evening type formal dresses it might be worth contacting local secondary schools. They may know of girls who are in need of a prom dress and can't afford one. A lady local to me (east midlands) takes donations and offers dresses and suits to prom attendees who need an outfit. A lovely idea I think.

Most charity chains will send their really good or special donations to their on line store or specialist shops.

Sorry I should have clarified I was thinking of something to do with school leavers proms/university formals as this seems to have become so much more of a thing in recent years!

@sportycustard that’s exactly what I’m after! If anyone knows of anything similar in London/the South East please shout

There is a charity who collect formal office wear for homeless/long term jobless/ asylum seekers so that they can attend job interviews. They might also provide formal wear - I can imagine lots of scenarios where someone may need to dress for an occasion for work.

When you donate to some charities I’m not sure they sort the wheat from the chaff very well. I imagine a dress finding a wearer for and event they’d need to spend £££ on otherwise may be a great use of the dress ...

There's a few orgs that take them for disadvantaged teens, google it, I know there's one in Lambeth as it was on a programme

Smart works- amazing charity

Foslady · 16/04/2019 18:09

If it’s Prom type then how about PromAlly, set up to hire out at low cost for prom nights (think TSB featured it as one of their on board findings)

blackfriars · 17/04/2019 15:28

I'll contact them both - thanks for your replies!
