To think it's "puffa" and "parka" coat and not "puffer" and "parker" coats?

I always thought it was the former, but I am noticing more and more people referring to the coats as "puffer" and "parker". Even some of the online stores are doing, I see. Maybe I've been wrong all these years? Confused

No you're definitely right

SosigDog · 16/04/2019 10:14

People are thick. You are correct.

YANBU

Thehop · 16/04/2019 10:14

You’re right, people just can’t spell.

UterusUterusGhali · 16/04/2019 10:17

It's not because people are thick Hmm
If you'd never seen "puffa" written down you might well assume it was "puffer", on account of it being so puffy.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 16/04/2019 10:19

Keep your puffer and your Parker in your Chester draws

resultswithintwoweeks · 16/04/2019 10:20

I thought maybe I'd been wrong all these years (older, pre-internet and had never seen the word actually written down). Thought I'd misheard it originally! Then I though maybe it came from "puffer fish" - all puffed up like one of those fish Grin 'cos "puffa" isn't really a thing is it?

YANBU. Thus is people who don't pronounce their 'rs' adding them on to words with none!Angry

jaseyraex · 16/04/2019 10:37

You're definitely right.

My friend had a baby she called Parker. Someone wrote her a card congratulating her on the birth of "Parka" Grin

resultswithintwoweeks · 16/04/2019 10:38

The shops are all doing it now! Maybe I should get on board?

TherapistInATabard · 16/04/2019 10:38

Well Puffa is a brand, so other shops wouldn’t be allowed to use that spelling. I don’t know if that’s the case for parka. I just googled it and loads of shops use ‘parka’

resultswithintwoweeks · 16/04/2019 10:39

Ooh, I didn't know Puffa was a brand - interesting!

Yes - it could be like the word "hoover" - actually a brand, but a lot of people talk of "hoovering" their carpets no matter what the make of the machine.

I went to the Horniman museum in London last week and there were Inuit PARKA jackets on display so you're 100% right with that one.

GiantPretzel · 16/04/2019 10:53

You’re right, of course, but people with non-rhotic rs pronounce them identically, as a lot of people write as they hear.

I keep seeing people writing ‘palava’ instead of ‘palaver’ on Mn, for instance.

Parker is a brand in this case

Smellslikemiddleagespirit · 16/04/2019 10:57

Puffs is a brand, but parka isn’t, so no excuse for “parkers”

When trying to buy a cheapish one on eBay recently for dog walking, I had to search for parkas and parkers separately because they are so commonly misspelt.

Smellslikemiddleagespirit · 16/04/2019 10:59

Ah, well in the Nordstrom case there are parkers, but the parka has been around for a very long time!

resultswithintwoweeks · 16/04/2019 11:01

Blush I didn't realise that. This is more confusing than I realised.

This ^ shopping on eBay can be difficult because of all the different ways things seemed to be spelled.

It was definitely 'Parka' in the 70's when I was ever so proud to get my first one 😁
