I'm just soooo tired! Went back to work off mat leave in January. I work shifts but only part time. I have a 4 yo and a 1 yo. I run 3-4 times a week (one long run up to 10 miles). Why am I sooooo exhausted? I'm on my third throat infection in two months and I feel wiped out after every run of 2-3 shifts. If I go to Dr will they check iron/thyroid levels? I literally have no energy to do anything else and feel like I am rubbish at being an adult as lots of people do so much more than me. I eat plenty and drink plenty water.

  1. It's not a competition. It doesn't matter what other people are doing.
  2. Yes, go and see your doctor about iron/thyroid etc.
  3. Start being kinder to yourself. You have two young children and a job. And, though you don't say so, I assume you are also doing household chores, shopping, cooking, cleaning. You don't need to also go running 4 times a week.

You've got two young children, a part time job, you run 4 times a week and you're wondering why you're so tired?!!! Definitely check your thyroid and iron levels and maybe have a think about whether you're getting enough nutrients but also remember you have a lot going on. Cut yourself some slack and make sure you give yourself time for a rest.

@bridgetreilly nope I'm not great with the housework at all, though I do do the majority of the cooking but do an online shop. I'm also rubbish at keeping up with life admin. I need to run to keep sane and to be able to eat (I'm half a stone overweight and I can't shift it)

They also may ask about bowel habits etc. I had a friend who was chronically tired and she's coeliac and didn't realise. You could have a look at your diet (cut out gluten) and see if that helps?

If it's a real, deep fatigue it might be a B vitamin deficiency, which is common. Get a good B-complex, Holland and Barratt do a good multi-complex in a big blue tub.

hiddeneverything · 15/04/2019 19:26

I didn't think of B12 deficiency, though on googling I don't have any of the other symptoms. I'd be interested to hear from anyone with a thyroid disease diagnosis as I don't think I should be as tired as this. Or any other suggestions? Will also look up coeliac x

Hi there I have an under active thyroid and the tiredness is unreal
Also other symptoms include weight gain dry skin hair loss constipation really heavy periods depression/anxiety joint pain feeling really really cold
I hope you feel better soon maybe ease up on the running for a bit you sound like you are doing too much
Go to the go and get checked if you have family history of thyroid disease tell the doc
Xx

hiddeneverything · 15/04/2019 19:49

@berryhead2013 thanks for your reply. I have all of those bar the constipation, albeit not in extreme forms. No family history that I'm aware of - how long did it take to get diagnosed?
