Dd just turned 3 months and having been initially not at all colicky for first 2 months plus these last two weeks is screaming blue murder, as if in serious pain, think high pitched red face shaking most evenings and random points in the day. I don’t understand what’s going on because our ds had both colic and reflux which caused this sort of crying abut from the get go rather than starting later on and can’t understand why it would start now. I’ve seen the GP who has given gaviscon but isn’t too worried as she’s gaining weight well, trying a council lactation consultant drop in tomorrow to check out feeding technique and possible tongue tie as does seem digestion related as does massive farts after crying fits, doing best to elevate and wind her after ever feed - nothing seems to help. Worst triggers seem to be pram and car rides, seems happiest in sling or when being cuddled and walked around over my shoulder. She’s normally such a happy little thing and really sad for her - it can sometimes seem that the screams come from nowhere. Am
I missing something obvious? Any ideas?

CMPI? Is she breastfed or on formula? Seems like breastfed from what you've said - is there dairy in your diet? Has your diet changed at all?

If you aren't dairy free it might be worth trying.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 15/04/2019 16:45

We had gaviscon for our breastfed DS, it made him massively constipated and distressed. Ranitidine is much better for BF babies. Maybe its that?

Shitonthebloodything · 15/04/2019 16:48

Are you bf'ing? Any changes to your diet? Medications?

Nnnnnineteen · 15/04/2019 16:49

Mine had colic from about 6-8 weeks. I'm not sure when it stopped exactly, but around 10 -12 weeks. It tended to start about 5 and finish about 9 or 10.. I was ready to lose the plot. She hated anything, but being held was slightly less hateful.

Popuppippa · 15/04/2019 16:53

DS2 was like this - 2/3 blissful weeks then he turned into a screaming banshee. He had cows milk protein intolerance but was only diagnosed by a paediatrician at 9 months.

He never slept unless being held and even then it wasn't guaranteed. He did grow out of it aged about 3, as predicted, and was prescribed Nutrimiagen as a baby. However, it was so disgusting he refused to drink it and had soya milk instead. I did breastfeed until he was 10 months and tried to eliminate all milk/products for both of us.

MaidofMuswell · 15/04/2019 16:57

Thanks everyone! Yes, bf and dr did ask about whether had much cows milk in diet - I don’t really but can try cutting it! Thing is my diets been mainly the same as far as I can think since she was born... it’s the high pitch of the screams that’s so heart braking it’s like someone is stepping on her toes or something she really
Sounds pained has anyone heard a cry like that? She also does this weird sucky Clicky thing with her mouth but no idea if that’s relevant! Also refuses dummy... sigh.

Constipation? My dd seemed to start with problems with constipation when she started teething. You could try some gentle belly massage and cycling her legs to help relieve any trapped wind and move things along. Warm water might help if you don’t mind giving a bottle and are careful not replace feeds with it.

Hollowvictory · 15/04/2019 16:59

Pram and car rides aren't triggers for colic. Have you been using ranitidine for the reflux?

TheWernethWife · 15/04/2019 17:02

The OP said the GP gave Gaviscon

Fiveredbricks · 15/04/2019 17:04

The farts may be from the swallowed air from the crying fits OP. She may have developed a lactose allergy (even if breastfed, boob milk has lactose)

Fiveredbricks · 15/04/2019 17:05

Get her ears checked too OP. Inner ear infections can result in the same behaviour.

My ds had two bottom teeth cutting through at 3m old so it can also be teething.

Can you give her calpol and see if it makes any improvement?

MaidofMuswell · 15/04/2019 17:10

Thanks all - yeah my only thought w pram or car maybe reflux and not being in comfortable position.... only thinking colic as think son sounded like this when he had it. Thanks everyone, will try cutting dairy and see where we get to! Will also try the massage and bicycle legs thank you!! X

Also good thinking about ear infections will get that checked thank you x

Clicky sound and need to relatch may also be indicators of a tongue tie causing her to swallow air.

If it's CMPI it may have gradually got worse through exposure to small quantities in your milk, which would explain the late onset.

Yes try Calpol to see if it is teeth or ear and GP could have a look at ears potentially. I always know one of mine has a sore ear when they make a sharp "pain" cry on turning their head.

MaidofMuswell · 15/04/2019 17:38

That’s interesting about clicking thank you! Almost hope is all tongue tie now but probably too simple!

We had this. DD1 used to scream and scream to the point that she would turn purple every night for hours around the same age as your baby. It was absolute hell. Like PP's she had cows milk protein allergy. I hope you get it sorted soon OP

MaidofMuswell · 15/04/2019 20:37

You poor things... it’s hard because the symptoms are so overlapping w other baby stuff like reflux etc... will try cutting it out and see where we get to! X

Someone I know had this problem, I think they went to a chiropractor or cranial osteopath. Might be worth considering if nothing else helps.

missymayhemsmum · 15/04/2019 20:46

poor things, dd had similar, we spent every evening for a month in a warm bath together as that was the only thing that seemed to help.
You could try a cranial osteopath?

MaryPopppins · 15/04/2019 20:48

Have a read up about silent reflux.

Our poor DD was in agony with it. As in she cried worse daily with her reflux than she did for her vaccinations.

GO fobbed is off with gaviscon and then something else the name I forget.

But in the end we had to go private, got ranitidine and then she was suddenly a happy baby.

ALLMYSmellySocks · 15/04/2019 20:51

Constipation? Allergy to something in breastmilk?

Samind · 15/04/2019 20:55

I would watch for constipation with gaviscon! Our baby got it bad after a couple of sachets. She was the same as yours symptomatically and it was a cow's milk intolerance. On prescribed formula which has made an awful lot of difference. Cooled boiled water is ace for wind, baths or warm towel over baby's stomach an then do some bicycle legs.

Samind · 15/04/2019 20:56

Reflux can be a symptom of cmpa

MatchSetPoint · 15/04/2019 21:05

What’s his skin like? Has he got a eczema type rash or mucus poop? He could have a milk intolerance, it’s really common.

user1468348545 · 15/04/2019 21:30

Watching with interest and going to try some of this as I could have written this post word for word!! Hope that's ok!!
