AIBU to think I can train for a half marathon in 5 months?

I have done a bit of running previously, never entered anything official, but I have not ran for 2 years and I am 2 stone overweight. Can I go from this to a half marathon in 5 months, or is it unreasonable to even consider?

Watching your posture in the early days will help you in the long run. I always lift my shoulders up, back and down as it instantly makes you stand upright and centers your weight a bit more evenly over your feet rather than on the balls. It also opens up your chest so you can get more oxygen in easier. Keep your hands loose to stop tension in your shoulders and avoid your hands crossing in front of your body to stop excess spinal rotation.
A good pair of trainers is a must, they don't have to be expensive just supportive for your own needs. Gait analysis works for most people (not me as the support they say I need messes with my knees and hips so I go for good cushioning instead) and it gives you an idea of what you should be wearing, you can buy past seasons trainers on sites like sportsshoes.com and start fitness for pretty decent prices.
I second the massage suggestion not just because it's the course I am currently doing but because it works! Check if you have any colleges locally that are doing sports therapy courses because they sometimes run clinics at cut prices or need volunteers for assessments.

Thanks for all the replies, feeling much more optimistic. I've signed up so it's now official! Grin Will give it a shot and hope I don't get any injuries to hinder me! Would be such an amazing feeling to cross that finish line.

@tobermory29 I did the London marathon in 2016, (age 35, normal weight) with zero training. No running experience at all.

I don't recommend it, I could have really hurt myself, but I got round. My half marathon time was 2 hours 37 minutes. Full was six hours.

So yes, 5 months for a half is absolutely stacks of time!!!
