To ask about this card machine

Springflower123 · 14/04/2019 23:36

Went to a spray tan place today and paid by card
When I looked at my receipt later, my full name , long card number and expiry dates were on it
Usually most of the numbers of the card are blocked out when u get a receipt and your name def isn’t on receipt usually!
Should I be worried? Will keep an eye on my account The card machine is obviously set up to take a reading of the card....

Maybe call your bank and ask their advice?

DanielRicciardosSmile · 14/04/2019 23:42

The machine will need to read all your details, the fact they're printed on your receipt doesn't mean it's capturing any more information than any other card reader. Was it a printed receipt or one of the old-style carbon flimsy ones? They're rare now but not unheard of and they always show full card number, name and expiry date. If it's printed then, yes, that's odd but I don't think it's particularly anything to be concerned about, other than obviously making sure you don't lose it. The shops copy would always have the full details without anything missing.

barcodescanner · 14/04/2019 23:45

Have they given you their copy instead of yours?

DanielRicciardosSmile · 14/04/2019 23:48

barcodescanner makes an excellent point.

Springflower123 · 14/04/2019 23:50

Ah, I didn’t realise - so the receipt that shops usually have always has all that info printed on it?
It wasn’t an old style receipt

SrSteveOskowski · 14/04/2019 23:54

Yes, I agree with the other posters there. I think you have their copy and vice versa.

Springflower123 · 14/04/2019 23:56

Thank you - I don’t feel so worried then
I thought it was a dodgy card machine ...

OP posts:
azulmariposa · 14/04/2019 23:58

This is why I always keep my receipts. Some places do print the whole number on the receipt, so I always take it away with me.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 15/04/2019 00:05

Yes, the only reason your details are blocked out on your receipt is to protect you in case you lose it. They usually print the first few and last few digits and asterisk out the rest which allows them to match the receipt to your card and their records in case of a refund. But their copy always has the full number on it.

SweetMarmalade · 15/04/2019 00:09

Does it state customer or merchant copy on the receipt?

As far as I was aware the merchant copy doesn’t have all of the digits.

chickenfajitas73 · 15/04/2019 00:15

I use PDQ card machines daily at work. The old ones print the full card details on but nowadays due to stricter data protection, they only show the last 4 digits and expiry date on the merchant copy and the customer copy.

PyongyangKipperbang · 15/04/2019 00:19

On my card machine it doesnt show the full number on either copy, certainly doesnt show the name.

I would be very concerned to be honest, doesnt sound right at all to me. I would ring your bank and let them know, actually I would probably ask for a new card to be safe.

Springflower123 · 15/04/2019 00:22

It’s a bit strange how it has all those details I mentioned. It basically means the only thing they don’t have is my security code - the 3 digits

OP posts:
TheSmallAssassin · 15/04/2019 00:33

As others have said, they need to read the long number and expiry date whether they print them out or not. Your card is still safe because to use those details to make a purchase without you being present they would need the three digits from the back.

PyongyangKipperbang · 15/04/2019 03:25

Your card is still safe

It really really isnt and to think it is is very naive. I would be ordering a new card.

barcodescanner · 15/04/2019 06:34

At my work the merchant copy has all details on it. Customer copy doesn't.

Newyearnewunicorn · 15/04/2019 06:43

If you make a card payment over the phone you give someone all your details, it basically works on trust. Retailers do have a strict set of data protection rules to abide by issues by the card processing companies.
You can be defrauded without ever using your card or giving the details to anyone through data mining, I lost £500 then the bank stopped my card and after an hour on the phone refunded the money.

adaline · 15/04/2019 06:48

They'll have given you the merchant copy by mistake.

I'm a manager in retail and our PDQ receipts are destroyed after a month. We have to keep them until then (they are kept locked in the office) in case of any discrepancies or issues with payment crop up - our PDQ machine isn't automatically linked to the till so we have to manually type the amount every time - which isn't normally a problem but there's always a chance of human error and things being typed in incorrectly.

adaline · 15/04/2019 06:50

All card machines used to work like this and lots of older ones still do! Are you just never going to pay by card again?

malmi · 15/04/2019 06:51

It used to be perfectly standard to print the full details on the customer and merchant receipts (they used a carbon copy so they were identical. You even got your signature on there). I still check my credit card receipt before throwing it away just in case it's not redacted. Don't worry about it.

JuniperBeer · 15/04/2019 06:54

Merchant copies shouldn’t have the full long number on them any more. New rules came in 2016/7.

Ncforever12345 · 15/04/2019 07:17

@JuniperBeer can you link to the rules? The merchant copies at work still show the full number

Springflower123 · 15/04/2019 08:18

Should be passing my bank tomorrow so I may pop in and show them the receipt and see what they think as well

OP posts:
JuniperBeer · 15/04/2019 08:59

@Ncforever12345 it is a rule of PCI DSS compliance.
If you are a merchant of any size accepting credit cards you must be in compliance with PCI rules. Google PCI requirements and you can see.

Ncforever12345 · 15/04/2019 09:44

@JuniperBeer thank you
