About bastarding tommee tippee sippy cups?

I know the lids need to be somewhat secure to prevent spillage but holy fucking moly! I've lost blood, sweat, tears and nails to them. Not to mention repetitive strain in my wrist from trying to get the fuckers open. I also once inadvertently elbowed ds smack bang in the forehead because he was standing behind me as the top gave way suddenly and my arm flew back with force 🙈

Not to mention the fact that if there's any liquid left inside and you DO manage to get the top off, you're guaranteed to need to use so much force that the drink will fly out everywhere anyway Hmm

Is it just me? Am I missing some tip or trick? Is there an easier way to remove the tops? without using a hammer

Have to push your thumbs up under the big lip bit. Only safe way. I now have short nails though simply because of these bastarding cups.

Cupcakey · 13/04/2019 19:59

The tips of my fingers have actually felt sore after wrestling with one of these bloody cups HmmShockGrinand once when trying to get the lid off my hand slipped and punched my own boob! Evil cup lol

SoyDora · 13/04/2019 20:02

They’re shit. Never got the obsession with them!

GeorgeTheFirst · 13/04/2019 20:04

Haha. I knew you were going to say that. Blimmin things.

BexleyRae · 13/04/2019 20:08

I used to use a spoon to lever the lid off

TimeIhadaNameChange · 13/04/2019 20:10

You need a teaspoon and use the handle to lever the top off. There's an indent under the lid under the spout that the handle fits perfectly.

Owlbert · 13/04/2019 20:16

Yanbu! I used these with my eldest and had no issues. This time I bought 2 and 2 weeks later got so annoyed I chucked the lids (kept the cups for snack pots) and went out and bought various other types of sippy cup all with screw on lids! Life is much better now

Unicornshopkeeper · 13/04/2019 20:22

I don't have a problem getting the lid off, though it is stiff, but I rarely use it as DD1 regularly holds it upside down and the water just pours out onto her and the floor

SparklySneakers · 13/04/2019 20:24

My kitchen ceiling has hot chocolate splatters on it in several places from those bastard cups. They won't clean off. Ds is 4 and has been able to use a proper cup since age 1 but he likes his morning hc in his sippy cup. And seeing as he has a tendency to be stroppy first thing it's safer!

IVEgottheDECAF · 13/04/2019 20:25

Never mind how hard the lid can be to get off have you seen how manky the spout gets! 🤢🤮

TheChippendenSpook · 13/04/2019 20:27

Running them under a bit of hot water is the best way.

GPatz · 13/04/2019 20:29

.....Oh. Did not know about the spout.

mnahmnah · 13/04/2019 20:33

I found immersing it in the washing up water worked! Easier. No mess.

anotherroutine · 13/04/2019 21:09

I've tried the thumbs manoeuvre (seems to be a nanny tip!) but didn't work. Maybe because I have stubby fingers and can't get the right leverage?

Have also tried immersing in washing up liquid in the past, and sometimes that helps but it can be hit and miss.

Interesting about the teaspoons! I will definitely try that Grin Will also inspect the spouts, though I may live to regret it 🤢

Though obvs the best advice seems to be to chuck the lot and buy screwies instead.

I use the “hook fingers in handles and push up with both thumbs” technique. Seems quite effective for me but my husband can’t do it at all. Thankfully she has now worked out the 360 cups so I just have to unscrew those slippery fuckers now, but at least they don’t slowly drain their innards all over the floor when she tips it up!

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 13/04/2019 21:16

I second warming them under water and then opening.

tinkertinker1 · 13/04/2019 21:29

Yes!! I just bought ds one for £1.50 at Sainsbury's....bargain I thought! Until I got home and it took me 3.5 minutes to actually get the lid off.....

Then gave it to ds and thought he's quiet....he's drenched. Absolutely drenched from head to toe and happily splashing in a pool of water on the floor.

Didn't put the bastard lid back on properly did I?!

anotherroutine · 13/04/2019 21:30

tinker 😂

@NannyR

yes those are the bastard sippy cups!

Helix1244 · 14/04/2019 00:41

Never had a problem but the newer ones leak if you take them out with milk in.

Mamalicious16 · 14/04/2019 00:44

Oh gawd - remember the putting milk in too warm and spurting all over the kitchen ( and in my eye) thing!

NWQM · 14/04/2019 13:59

But very very annoyingly and messily my child had the technique sorted quite early on!

TurquoiseDress · 14/04/2019 17:52

I now use one of the new ones and not had any leaking problems

Only put water in them, neither DC drinks milk out of them, only from an open cup
