Puppy Bitten

Softsoftsoft · 13/04/2019 19:04

Posting for traffic, puppy is on his way to emergency vet.
Our pup had his first outing today after having all his vaccinations. Met a friend who had her dog with her and he bit our pup on the back legSad
It bled, and DH thought he could see bone.
I'm so upset, poor puppy.
Is this going to freak him out now? Will he be put off going out? seeing other dogs? he's such a good boy, I'm devestated😢

He hates the cone😢, he cried so much bless him. I'm going to look at the inflatable ones in the pet shop. The wound is on his back leg so not sure if inflatable will work??

It should work, the problem is getting them to fit and stay on. You can attach it to a harness but you need to be in the room with him while he's wearing that. If you have to leave him put the cone back on.
You can get inflatable collars and see through cones on Amazon, idk why they still sell the opaque ones. Its worth having one in your first aid kit.
Its possible your trainer might know some pp who can volunteer to visit with their safe adult dogs. Some groups are friendlier than others.

PutyourtoponTrevor · 14/04/2019 12:36

It might not be the cone making him cry, our dog cries for about a day after she's been under, think it's just after effects of the anaesthetic

Softsoftsoft · 14/04/2019 14:18

He hasn't got the cone on now, he seems back to his normal self. we are watching him like a hawk! I've popped and bought an inflatable one for tonight. will see how it goes.
He's doing really well, full of beans and starving! The vet gave us some tinned 'Royal Canin' food for 3 days for gastro purposes.
He's got really runny poo but I'm guessing that's the an anaesthetic.
He's also got antibiotics and anti inflammatorys.

Bless him! You must have been distraught! Why on earth did the adult dog bite a pup? Sad
Hope he mends quickly and it doesn’t dent his confidence.

Softsoftsoft · 14/04/2019 14:34

missy apparently this dog is known to be aggressive so was shut indoors. (pup and another dog in garden quite happily)
someone accidently let aggressive dog out who went straight for pups back legSad

He’ll bounce back much quicker than you’re expecting. Don’t be afraid to take him out again soon and the hardest thing will be trying to be positive and happy yourself as he will pick up on your anxieties.

I’ll second the suggestion a pp made about just sitting and watching the world go by. You will probably be fine going to puppy club this week, just give him lots of breaks if he looks tired.

Do you have him insured?

Do repost in the doghouse there’s some very knowledgeable people on there.

Softsoftsoft · 14/04/2019 14:43

Thank you. yes I'm also posting in the doghouse. we have a months insurance from the breeder and we are in the process of getting quotes for when that expired.
Didn't imagine we would be claiming alreadyShock

Nothing to add except I’m really sorry to hear this. I hope he’s on the mend soon. To be honest you will probably be more traumatised by this than him. Most pups bounce back easily.

Miscella · 14/04/2019 14:52

Glad to hear he’s getting back to normal. We found the inflatable collar a godsend, ours has Velcro to keep it on as well as loops on the inside to thread a normal collar through so it is very secure. When fully inflated it is quite wide so pup shouldn’t be able to get to his back leg. Ours quite liked wearing it!

billybagpuss · 14/04/2019 15:26

Do check the exclusions on any new insurance that you take out as unfortunately this will now count against you. I just got quotes with pet plan and their exclusions were ridiculous even including things I’d just asked advice for in passing. You May have the go with renewing the free one 😢

recrudescence · 14/04/2019 15:47

Pleased to hear he is on the mend.

Softsoftsoft · 14/04/2019 15:54

thanks Billy I did wonder if it would be better to continue with the free insurance. Will see what they are like for paying up!

Don't panic too much. Our 6 month old EBT got pounced on yesterday by a small black ball of fury.

It's owner must have known as it had a soft cloth muzzle on, but it was REALLY going for my dog. Mine hit the deck in full submission pose, belly flat to the ground, head down [new behaviour, took a few weeks of being growled at for him to learn to be polite] and the little black ball just kept coming. Owner comes across and ask if my dog is OK with it???????

Then, and I a promise I am not joking, she takes its muzzle off it to give it a treat and pet it and it flew for my dog again. I picked him up and asked if she could put hers on a a lead (mine was) and it turns out she didn't have one with her!!!!!

Thankfully a friend with a HUGE dog ambled up and she picked up her still snarling ball of fury and walked off moaning about other dog owners having no consideration.

My trembling pup was absolutely fine after 20 minutes of being bounced by the humongous German Shepherd Grin He has been equally fine today with quite a few dogs of all sorts of sizes and temperament. But, whilst he is seemingly fine, I won't forget her or her dog for a while, I was horrified!

Sorry, I meant that to be reassuring. Pups are often more guided by our reaction to an incident than their own. So just take yours out again and try not to be too tense though the lead when you meet some dogs!

Good luck!

Softsoftsoft · 14/04/2019 17:12

thanks curious your poor dog! Fancy not taking a lead when your dog is on a muzzle! some people arnt safe!

The inflatable collar seems to be a success. He shook his head a few times but then settled down. Obviously he'd rather not have it but it's much better than the horrible hard plastic cone. It will be used when he's neutured too. He's taken his medication so well. So proud of himStar
