I work as a TA with children who have ASC.

Every child with ASC In our school HATES/is scared of/is anxious about hand driers.

We have various toilets in the school where they are switched off permanently.

Thinking about it, surely one of the most obvious and simple thing that any organisation/business can do is to remove hand driers.

Surely using recycled paper towels, with enough bins, and onward recycling is better for the environment too.

Companies like Sainsbury’s and Morrison’s who do “low impact hours” once or twice a week could very quickly become more “low impact” 24 hours a day simply by removing all the hand driers.

Extremely biased viewpoint here! My deceased DB owned the company which introduced hand dryers to the UK and installed them more or less everywhere. The familar white squarish ones with the big round metal spout which pre-dated those Johnny-come-lately Dyson air blades. He made a fortune, died too young, and was very generous to his family. Lots of exotic holidays on his yacht and in his villa and very large bequests. So the Tricky family is very grateful for all the hot air.

It's kind of sad that it's one small thing that might help people with asd navigate the world, and people act like you are being a twat for suggesting it. There are so many people with asd in the world, and it's never going to improve because everyone seems to think it's pandering when you make a suggestion that would help people with asd.

That's life! I have PTSD and noises really rattle me. I have a son with ASD, too. It's not 'one small thing', it's a lot of things that rattle us both up. We have both had to develop coping strategies because the world is what it is and it's not going to change because of our conditions.

Hand-dryers don't bother our ASD son at all. But he'd have great fun with a paper towel dispenser, he'd pull them all out onto the floor.

Yeah, hand driers don't bother my son with ASD. He a bit germaphobic so likes this and he doesn't have touch anything to dry his hands.

There is some quite interesting research into the environmental impact on various options.

Of course children with SN should have their needs met, but I do think kids being let loose with paper towels tends to create huge amounts of mess and unnecessary waste.

Where I grew up (down under) at our primary and senior state schools we didn't get paper towels or hand driers. It was shake dry or dry them on your clothes. Sounds barbaric but a lot less hassle! I guess if the bathrooms here were in outdoor blocks (like in Oz) then the hands would freeze.
