Have you ever looked at your phone whilst driving?

Just that.

I see it daily, multiple times of the day. I live on a quiet residential street that has two nurseries and a primary school and many of the people I witness on their phones are driving with little children in the car.

I have never ever done it myself because there is no need. So who are the people who do? Where are you parents in my postcode who drive and look at your phones? Some of you will be regular posters on MN. Why do you do it?

I'm not expecting anyone to fess up tbh.

Never have and never will. If it's that important they'll leave a message

BettyJune07 · 12/04/2019 20:37

Never have, mine stays in my handbag on silent when I drive!

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 12/04/2019 20:38

As in use it? Like checking texts or facebook or something. No. Nothing that requires actually engaging with it. I use it as a sat nav so often have it on the dashboard and I look at it as in following the map or occasionally tap it to accept a different route but actually pick it up and do something on it, no way. It only takes a seconds distraction. Most of the time it's in my bag in the boot, only time I have it out is if I'm following Google maps.

Seniorschoolmum · 12/04/2019 20:38

Over the years, yes I’ve done it. Usually under pressure of work, trying to keep to schedule while complete something else.
Work attitudes are changing, but there are still plenty who put on the pressure.
I’ve gone to the other extreme now, I don’t answer the phone even hands free, because that is still a distraction. The phone lives in the boot. People still moan at me.

Celebelly · 12/04/2019 20:38

Yes but only cos I use it for satnav and I have a mount for it on the dashboard! Not for texting or owt else and I set Google Maps up before I leave so I don't have to fiddle with it en route.

Boom45 · 12/04/2019 20:40

Once. But i wasn't driving, i was at a standstill on a a motorway and my podcast had finished. My phone can pretty much be controlled from my steering wheel/voice commands tho so i can make calls and even reply to texts without touching it which i admit is incredibly useful.....

OldAndWornOut · 12/04/2019 20:40

I don't drive but many a time I've been almost run over by people blissfully unaware because they're too caught up in their phone.

Moominfan · 12/04/2019 20:41

Yea it sit on dash board for sat nav and music. Don't see it as any different from changing radio or inbuilt satnav

80sMum · 12/04/2019 20:45

I use my phone as a satnav but I always set up the route before I turn the engine on - and the phone is fixed into a dashboard mount while I'm driving.

BarrenFieldofFucks · 12/04/2019 20:45

It's different normally because the buttons are waaaaay smaller and take more concentration to hit, especially in a moving vehicle.

I have 'android vehicle' or similar on mine, which prevents access to most things and blows symbols up huge for sat nav and music.

That said, posh new car connects via Bluetooth and all controls can be done by voice or on the steering column. The touch screen is huge.

Anyway, waffling. No, I don't. I try to remember to look up address, sat nav etc before pulling away, make sur everything is set up.

I see a few people using them regularly, thinking they're being very subtle by having their phones down low and trying not to make it obvious they're looking, but it is fairly noticeable.

HundredMilesAnHour · 12/04/2019 20:47

Only once. And in my defence I was stationary in traffic (and continued to be stationary for a good 30 mins). I saw a text flash up on my phone screen saying my flight the next day had been cancelled. I picked my phone up and read the full message then put my phone back and didn't touch it again despite me wanting to get online and/or start making calls. Was a total nightmare as I was starting a new job the next day and was flying out to Texas to meet my boss and lots of key stakeholders and needed to sort new flights out asap. It felt like the longest traffic jam ever.

That's my only time. I don't even use my phone as a satnav (I have a Garmin satnav instead) so my phone is usually tucked away in my handbag as any calls will come through my hands-free and show the caller on my dashscreen.

chippingalong · 12/04/2019 20:48

Oh, I'm afraid I have. Very stupid. I too see it all the time. They're all out there somewhere!

MiniMum97 · 12/04/2019 20:49

All the time. I use it as a sat nav.

RHTawneyonabus · 12/04/2019 20:56

No. I’ve occasionally snuck a look while stopped at lights for a long time. But I’m no longer even doing that. There needs to be a clear line of 0 use when driving/engine on even if you are not moving.

At the other extreme. I was over taking a van yesterday. It had been middle lane hogging in the motorway for miles. It was quite scary as it started to drift over and I thought it was going hit my car on the side.

Bloke was driving it and texting on his phone doing 70 on the M4!

Cafelatte2go · 12/04/2019 20:58

Let's be honest... most people. Traffic jams especially

BuckingFrolics · 12/04/2019 20:58

I see blokes in vans doing it all the time.

pickme · 12/04/2019 20:59

Yes because it vibrates or buzzes and attracts attention so now I put it in the central storage box so I can't see it even if it vibrates.

Langrish · 12/04/2019 20:59

No, very deliberately keep it way out of reach and dont want hands free either which is almost as bad. I can always tell when the person in front of me is though, you can see their eyes in their mirror (being distracted by that is probably just as bad as looking at a phone actually: note to self, don’t do that anymore, however annoying they are Grin

Pardonwhat · 12/04/2019 20:59

Yes. I don’t send texts or anything that takes any concentration or time but I’ll have a quick glance to slide it across to answer calls so they can come through to hands free etc. I’ve also glanced at my sat nav on my phone for clarification quite a few times too.
I applaud people who’ve genuinely never glanced at their phone whilst behind the wheel of a car!

GruciusMalfoy · 12/04/2019 20:59

I use mine in a dash holder as a sat nav. But the most I'll do is start/stop a navigation by pressing one button. I wouldn't try and program a new route, or even think about looking at messages.

pickme · 12/04/2019 21:00

Basically out of sight out of mind

GruciusMalfoy · 12/04/2019 21:00

I don't accept calls when driving either, I'd be far too distracted.

PissOffPeppa · 12/04/2019 21:01

I look at it all the time. I never touch it unless I’m parked.

Fairylea · 12/04/2019 21:01

Never. It drives me absolutely crazy how many people I pass on the roads when I’m driving that are blatantly on their phone and suddenly swerve back into their lane when they realise I’m coming towards them. I live rurally and people seem to think it’s okay to do it round here because we just don’t have the police presence to stop people.

SocksInPeril · 12/04/2019 21:02

Yes, but only in sat nav capacity. If I know where I’m going it’s either in my bag or pocket. If I need the sat nav I have it mounted on the dash and will glance at it. I don’t programme or fiddle with it on the move though (or even at traffic lights). I pull over for that.
