Would you ask for a partial refund?

I purchased a 6k car in cash from a small garage a few days ago and it had a boot tray to reveal more space underneath that I didn't realise lifted up until today. Anyway I have lifted it up and i have found rubbish underneath such as tobacco packets and rizzla paper, personal documentation such as bank statements belonging to the previous owner and dirty needles and a used needle disposal box🤢 I honestly feel sick that I have had my small child in this car and I just immediately shut the boot and haven't touched it since, i am going to talk to the garage owner tomorrow but what would be reasonable to request? A professional clean? A partial refund? Tbh I feel like just telling him to take the car back altogether.

how would you know if there’s needles embedded within seats etc?
You could argue that of any used car. It's too far fetched to be a valid reason to reject the car.

The OP has found needles in the car though!!

morefoolyou · 12/04/2019 21:48

Jeez I think you are being a tad dramatic.
When you buy a used car you are buying a car full of the previous owner's DNA, hair, skin cells etc... probably seamen too as lots of people have sex in cars!
You aren't going to get hepatitis or HIV from being in the same car as old needles.
Professional clean to a high standard. Get it steamed also to kill off any germs. A tank full of petrol to apologise
I wouldn't plaster bad reviews on the internet until you give the business owner the opportunity to put things right.
The mark of a good business is how they deal with things if something goes wrong

savageswimmer · 12/04/2019 21:53

Morefool, if you read my subsequent posts you will realise that I have given him the opportunity to put things right!

To be honest OP, I think you're very out if order leaving them bad reviews. They obviously didn't know they were there either and have offered you the price of a car wash to remove them. You were very unreasonable to think you were entitled to a partial refund.

gamerchick · 12/04/2019 22:21

You want putting things right to equal your overreaction. It's not going to happen because you're being ridiculous.

savageswimmer · 12/04/2019 22:23

What car wash do you know pinky that would touch needles for a fiver!

OP posts:
savageswimmer · 12/04/2019 22:24

I think a professional clean should have been the least they offered, I asked on here what was reasonable, a professional clean or a partial refund, I never said I was demanding a refund! I just want the dirty needles removing from my car and it cleaning.

OP posts:
Pinkyyy · 12/04/2019 22:27

I'm pretty sure most hand car washes would. I just don't see why you're trying to ruin their reputation over an honest mistake. If you went to them with the attitude you have now, I'm not surprised they weren't very compensating.

gamerchick · 12/04/2019 22:29

Why can't you get rid of the needles. Pop into a chemist and ask them who will dispose of them. They're in a box!

The rest of the rubbish should then be easy to sort. I honestly can't understand why you're making such a meal of this.

savageswimmer · 12/04/2019 22:30

Why don't people read the full thread? They are not all in a box.

OP posts:
Pinkyyy · 12/04/2019 22:32

So put on a pair of rubber gloves and make sure you don't pierce them. You honestly are making such a big deal out of it.

ShesABelter · 12/04/2019 22:35

Pinkyy you clearly wouldn't know good customer service if it slapped you in the face with that attitude..I hope you aren't in a customer facing role.

Its not bloody hard for a garage to do a valet on a car where a customers found used needles and other drug paraphernalia.

ShesABelter · 12/04/2019 22:36

@gamerchick the op has said at least twice they aren't all in a box. If you are going to try rib someone and make out they are being hysterical at least get the facts right.

Talkingfrog · 12/04/2019 22:37

You have back statements, and I am sure paperwork that came with the car would have had details of the previous owner. Have you tried contacting them. Maybe they just forgot they were there. Needles can fall out of a sharps box if the lid is not properly closed, especially if it fell over in the boot. They may be happy to have the statements back and remove all the needles for you.

Pinkyyy · 12/04/2019 22:44

@ShesABelter I do know good customer service thank you. I also know that when a customer has a bad attitude, they don't deserve anything. I'm Sick of people thinking they can walk all over businesses just because they're a paying customer.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 12/04/2019 22:45

I'm sorry but this is proper grim. I'm surprised so many people are being blase about this. Used needles, loose in the boot and everyone is telling you to get a bin bag and deal with it. I'm not crying HIV but its bloody disgusting to sell a car in that state

Singletomingle · 12/04/2019 22:47

Truly poor from the garage. They really need to get it properly valeted for you, it may be that they dont have in house valeters, decent valeters or just overworked valeters. In which case you could push for them to pay for a professional valeter/detailer to go through the car for you.

Dramatical · 12/04/2019 22:49

Oh. I would just clean the car!

gamerchick · 12/04/2019 22:50

gamerchick the op has said at least twice they aren't all in a box. If you are going to try rib someone and make out they are being hysterical at least get the facts right

Who's ribbing?

There are places who will dispose of these needles. This is the least hassly thing to do other than stress out and leave bad reviews 'all over the internet'. All it would have taken was a phone call to find out.

Then everyone could have got on with their lives.

NutMeghan · 12/04/2019 22:56

I think that that is poor service from the garage. They should have apologised for not cleaning out the car properly and should have said they will try to ensure it won't happen again. Very rude of them to be so flippant. I would have been shocked and I think most people would have been also.

But I don't think you should expect a refund. Or a professional clean. I think it was just bad luck.

HIVpos · 12/04/2019 23:14

@Neilsfavouritechilli “I'm not crying HIV but its bloody disgusting to sell a car in that state”

So why even mention HIV seeing as it’s not a risk?

Also everyone had not said to get a bin bag and deal with it. There is already a sharps box in the boot that can be used for safe disposal for any used needles not already in it. It sounds like the sort of container diabetics are supplied with.

savageswimmer · 12/04/2019 23:15

The needles have never share written on them in big letters if anyone can identify them? They are small and purple.

OP posts:
Pinkyyy · 12/04/2019 23:18

Sounds like steroid injections to me. The type people use if they're a gym fanatic.

molemonkey · 12/04/2019 23:23

Under trade description act you have 30 days to take it back if there is an issue with the car. So it's in their best interest to pay for a professional clean.
My dh owns his own garage and this has come from him. He said if he'd missed what you'd found he would definitely pay for a pro clean.
Stand your ground with the garage.

savageswimmer · 12/04/2019 23:34

With them having never share on them is what made me think they may have been for drug use.
