To not put him in a cot bed yet

DS will be 2 next week and is currently sleeping in a cot or in with us. He isn’t trying to climb out of his cot yet, and fits perfectly well in there. He also wants to be in with us a lot, so I worry that moving him into a cot bed will make it harder to get him to sleep on his own as he can just get up and into our room. Would it be okay to keep him in a cot until he’s a bit bigger, or does he really need to move to a real bed?.

We’re having this dilemma too!
DD1 moved to a bed at just over 2, as we were staying somewhere she couldn’t have a cot. We would have done it before 2.5 though as we wanted to move her before DD2 came along.
DD2 is 2 now, and still in her cot. Moving her to a bed will be a bit of a hassle in their room, and she hasn’t yet managed to climb out so we’re kinda reluctant to change it. However, she does try to climb out the cot, and only hasn’t succeeded because she’s too short! So I’m thinking we’re going to have to do it soon.
I don’t think there’s a “right” time, and definitely if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Move him whenever you feel it's right - sod what other people say - if you're all sleeping well right now, then that's all that matters! For what it's worth we went straight from cot to normal single bed & just used a guard for a while till he got used to it. We also had a baby gate on the door of his bedroom for a while so that when he did get out he couldn't just automatically come into us or wander about elsewhere upstairs.

Don’t change it if you don’t need to. Some of my DS friends were in cots til 3 as they never climbed out

We took the side off for my DS at 21 months as he climbed out at 16 months (previously lowered the mattress right to the floor, but we were going on holiday and knew a travel cot wouldn’t contain him so he needed to be used to a bed). Moved him to a “big boy bed” in his new room at 2.2 as DD was born a month later and we wanted the nursery for her. Absolutely no issues at all with his sleep.

DD is 18m and has shown no inclination to climb out. No plans to take the side down any time soon.

And yes don’t bother with a toddler bed. Just get a normal single bed and a bed guard
