*joke

InspectorClouseauMNdivision · 11/04/2019 13:25

There. Is. MoreShock

SmileEachDay · 11/04/2019 13:38

What is deeply damaging to women or feminism about these messages?

“Full of compassion, love and understanding”

“To spread awareness and love”

“To listen and give people the benefit of the doubt before judging”

All of that boils down to “feminists need to be nice, girls need to be understanding and put others first.

It gives credence to the ridiculous socialisation of females to be nice. I think that message is deeply problematic and damaging. That is not feminism.

It’s a fucking joke, people

It really isn’t, Also - I wish it was.

longwayoff · 11/04/2019 13:39

But . . . A joke is only a joke if its funny. Otherwise we may as well all invite Jim Davidson over to hear his views on feminism. We all know how hilarious he is.

Alsohuman · 11/04/2019 13:44

I don’t see how anyone could view it as anything other than a joke, personally.

longwayoff · 11/04/2019 13:49

I'm sending Jim over for tea. You share a sense of humour clearly. Get your pinny on and be sure to wiggle that ass for him

SmileEachDay · 11/04/2019 13:50

Also i understand what you mean. But it genuinely is not presented as a piece of irony - it’s presented as a piece of feminist art work.

I think liberal feminism often finds itself in knots because it wants to be inclusive - so it forgets that women - and specifically the freeing of women from oppression - are meant to be at the centre.

After anthropological expeditions to Tumblr I believe the 'jiggling butt' thing is meant to be a body positivity statement. I can also be certain that the spreading of love and understanding will not include men in any respect, so I'm sure that will come as a degree of comfort. I can also reasonably predict that the person who drew this has not had a natural hair colour for almost a decade.

DioneTheDiabolist · 11/04/2019 13:57

So women who do this can't be feminists? My aunt is a feminist academic who in retirement still hosts and attends international women's meetings. My mum worked delivering DV, sexual and mental health programmes to marginalised women. They would have been much less successful in their fields without the above.

InspectorClouseauMNdivision · 11/04/2019 14:06

Artist's name is Joanna Thangiah

SmileEachDay · 11/04/2019 14:08

Dione - of course they can.

However, I don’t think “be nice” is central to feminism. I think it is absolutely central to the gender stereotypes applied to women.

Fuck that shit

SmileEachDay · 11/04/2019 14:14

MephistophelesApprentice

Tell me more about how you came to the conclusion about the doesn’t apply to men and the hair?

Bit confused about her physiology. Her belly is between her front legs.

SmileEachDay · 11/04/2019 14:21

pothole yes. The knowledge of anatomy is an additional worry. 😂

OP posts:
HBStowe · 11/04/2019 14:39

So women who do this can't be feminists?

Of course they can. But there is a world of difference between saying ‘feminists can be kind’ and saying ‘the purpose of feminism is kindness’, and it’s important that people recognise that difference.

SmileEachDay · 11/04/2019 15:42

Indeed HB

The trope of feminists being humourless harpies is a reaction to women not being smiley enough about their place in society.

The artist didn't say that the purpose of feminism is kindness.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 11/04/2019 23:06

That thing is horrible.

The feminist unicorn seems pretty intent on being kind and nice. Also pink and glittery.

You don’t see a problem with the unicorn. I get that.

I see a massive problem with the unicorn.

OP posts:
DioneTheDiabolist · 11/04/2019 23:43

What is it with being kind? Or liking pink glitter on your unicorn that you have a problem with? I get that it is not your image of feminism OP, but women other than you are feminists.

What would your feminist unicorn look like?

SmileEachDay · 11/04/2019 23:54

I don’t think I’d pick a mythical being to represent feminism.

If I had to?

She’d have:

A brain for critically thinking
A mouth for questioning
A stomach for fights (and I’d put it in the right place 😂)
A tail for flicking the Vs and giving no fucks
Hooves for standing her ground
Ears for listening to her sisters
Eyes for seeing that oppression still happens
A heart full of strength
And ovaries of steel.

OP posts:
SmileEachDay · 11/04/2019 23:54

Yours, Dione?

OP posts:
EluphNaugeMeop · 12/04/2019 00:00

That image does not represent feminism. That is quintessentially representational of craven appeasement of the oppression of the patriarchy, fully embracing female socialisation and rejecting the very idea of women as fully human.
