to think my baby didn't sleep last night because I had an energy drink?

I never, ever drink energy drinks. Apart from last night... I agreed to go on a run with my friend. I was knackered and didn't really want to go. There was a rather large energy drink in the fridge that my brother left here. He uses them before the gym, so I figured I would drink it. It was pretty grim and just tasted like sugar. I ran pretty well, but not putting that down to the drink.

My DS is ebf and I'm now feeling stupid for not thinking about the effect this may have had on him. He was awake all night which is not usual.

I know, I was stupid to drink it. I didn't even think! Beating myself up enough about it, please don't pile in 😥

AIBU to think the caffeine kept him up?

Caffeine made mine unsettled at night if I drank coffee or coke within couple of hours before a feed

Surely sugar more likely to be a factor than caffeine but I know nothing

I definitely think there's something to it. Maybe doesn't affect all babies but I've been drinking decaf coffee and for a few days last week I had 1 normal coffee in the morning. My son wouldn't sleep for the whole day on those days and was very overtired when it came to bed time. He's 11 weeks for reference. I've stopped the morning coffee again and he's ok again.

Ah don't worry love, we all make mistakes particularly when we are sleep deprived! It won't hurt baby in the long run, just avoid doing it again. I hope you get a solid nap today!

notacooldad · 11/04/2019 09:38

He may have been sensitive to the drink, it may just be coincidence but one things for sure it is silly to beat yourself up over it.
There's no harm done, you got out and had a run which sounds like you enjoyed so that's a good thing.
Absolutely no harm done.
If you carry on having a guilty attitude for every minor thing you think you've done wrong you are in for a very long, worrying 18 + years!!😀Seriously let it go and have a rest today.

Out of interest did you drink much caffeine when you were pregnant? DS never seemed affected by caffeine but I had continued to have my usual 3 coffees a day when pregnant so though he might have built up a tolerance so to speak. Happy to be corrected on this by someone more knowable of the science of it!

Once when he was about 7 months I had one more coffee than usual and was up literally all night without a wink of sleep and he slept like the proverbial baby that night Grin

Paradise I read that somewhere - may have been on kellymom website - that if you had caffeine during pregnancy your baby is less likely to be affected by you drinking it whilst bf.
I drank coffee from 2nd trimester on and my son doesn’t seem at all sensitive to it through my milk.

I think it depends on the person

I have breast fed 3 dc and I drink coffee by the bucket and they have always slept, but then I drank coffee all the time while pregnant so maybe that’s why it didn’t effect them?

Do you normally drink coffee/tea a lot?

If the caffeine was unusual for you then yes I suppose it could of effected the babies sleep
