To not go to work because of a UTI?

Hi,

I have been awake all night, I haven't been to bed yet, I am almost 100 sure I have a UTI, it started a couple of days ago where it just hurt towards the end of peeing but not I am peeing a lot more frequently and I have an annoying pain down below constantly that has kept me awake (is this normal?)

I might get in the bath in a few mins.

Is it ludicrous to take a day off work for this? I don't think I've had one since a child. Do I need antibiotics or will it clear up on its own?

Certainly go see a GP today, don't leave it. They can get really nasty. I was hospitalised because I thought it would just clear up. I needed to be dehydrated (I was constantly being sick and passing out from the pain) and needed antibiotics to clear it.

palebluewalls · 11/04/2019 06:49

Why aren't you going to the doctors?

olivegardens · 11/04/2019 06:52

To be honest, I didn't think I needed a doctor until tonight. I have been at work like normal and I was peeing the regular amounts, it just hurt a tiny bit at the end. I didn't realise until tonight since it got worse that I should not probably see a GP. Although I thought they usually cleared up alone?

Definitely try to see a doctor. I developed sepsis from a UTI. They are not to be taken lightly. don't go to work , you need your own loo!

ValleyoftheHorses · 11/04/2019 06:54

Of course you shouldn’t go! I have had UTIs for 30 years and can never work through despite being self employed and having a day off being a big deal. You need to see the GP for antibiotics today.

Another vote to get antibiotics. Don’t leave it.

chutneypig · 11/04/2019 06:55

Another vote for the GP. I had one last year, never suffered previously. I ended up in hospital for 3 days with a kidney infection. I very much wish I’d sought help sooner. I had mentioned it to a nurse at the practise but she wasn’t interested as it didn’t affect what she was doing. I should have followed my gut feeling that it needed attention.

alliejay81 · 11/04/2019 06:57

Definitely go to the GP and drink some water. The antibiotics kick in pretty quickly do hopefully you will be feeling much better.

I guess whether you go to work or not, depends on how much pain you are in and your job. I've definitely worked, but I can work from home. If you job involves standing or lots of talking (I think a Ito might make concentrating hard), I think you probably need the day off.

It was only a month ago I was on antibiotics for gastritis!!

Thank you, what a nightmare. I was really hoping this would clear up on its own.

If the doc can't make you an appointment for today ask if you can do a urine sample and have them send it off for you.

AftonGlen · 11/04/2019 07:00

I would take a day off as well and go to your GP. I had a recurring UTI when I was at uni and had to leave lectures because sitting still and concentrating was absolutely excruciating - I don't know why I left it so long to get checked out because after a course of antibiotics I was as right as rain.

Musicaltheatremum · 11/04/2019 07:07

Try your local pharmacy. Many pharmacies can give you antibiotics as long as there's no blood in your urine and you're not pregnant and you're between 16 and 65.

azulmariposa · 11/04/2019 07:38

Don't have a bath! At least don't hand soap or anything in the water.
A few years ago I was suffering from loads of UTIs, and when I saw the gp she asked if I bathed or showered. I'd recently started to have baths after years of showering and it seemed to tie in with the UTIs starting. She explained that the vulva is self-cleaning and the lotions and potions in the bath water upset the natural balance down there.
Since then I've hardly bathed, and they have cleared up. Showers for me now!

Yogagirl123 · 11/04/2019 07:44

I suffer with UTI often, common with my disability unfortunately, definitely see GP, and take sample in a sterile container to be tested at the lab.

You will more than likely need antibiotics, which work like magic, you must also finish the course, if you don’t the infection may not fully clear.

YANBU to take a day off work, it’s important that UTI is treated ASAP, to avoid complications.

I now take d-mannose powers, been revolutionary for me, Urologist is delighted that I haven’t had an infection for 6mths now. I would recommend to people that suffer from reoccurring UTI.

I hand one 2 weeks you have my sympathy!
I found out that:-

  1. NO baths- shower
  2. plenty of fluids and peeing- if it’s hasn't cleared in 3-5 days then go to the GP
  3. A hot water bottle can help, between your legs
  4. That cranberry juice wasn’t provenShock I always believe it

I've been in hospital over the weekend because of a UTI. Get plenty of fluids. It can be any fluid.
