AIBU to be peeved, or just over sensitive re: nickname

I'm prepared to be told I'm being either, as I can't really put my finger on 'why' it annoys me so much...I probably need to just let it go, but...

I'm a teacher (relevant), and have just started OLD. Several of the guys I've exchanged messages with refer to me as 'Teach'. Constantly, during messages, eg 'morning Teach', 'what's Teach been up to today?', 'given any detentions out today Teach?' This kind of thing. I don't refer to them as 'banker' or 'driver' or whatever. I imagine they'd do the same if I was a doctor or nurse...but probably not if I was a checkout operator, bus driver or an office clerk!

Just feels weird to me...but as I said, not sure if I'm just being over sensitive here.

Your opinions would be most welcome 😊

It's probably a mixture of the dodgy magazine/movie aspect and a bit of I-CBA-to-remember-the-name-and-I've-already-got-The-Blonde-and-The-Brunette-With-The-Tits.

You're The Teacher in their mind, not a person yet. I suppose a reverse would be if you had mentally categorised them as The Mechanic, The Fireman, The Copper, The Surfer and The One With The Cute Dog In His Profile Photo.

Or, in this case, as Twat 1, Twat 2 and Twat 3.

Re: Using your name in every sentence. I had an ex who used to do this when he met new people. Oh how I cringed. He thought it made him seem interested but you can't fake interest by just using a name! It is so painful watching people trying to do "How to make friends and influence people"

NorthernKnickers · 10/04/2019 09:36

@StrongerThanIThought76 I've had the 'Miss' thing too...🤦‍♀️

@TheInventorofToasterStreudel agreed! If just sounds awkward and forced...definitely not a way to 'win friends and influence'. Whoever makes this stuff up (Dale Carnegie, I'm talking to you!) needs to listen in to some of the conversations 'inspired' by their twaddle! It's really cringeworthy stuff 😳

OP, my pleasure :) Good luck with dating!

Just tell people that you don't want to be called that

BertrandRussell · 10/04/2019 11:05

“Just tell people that you don't want to be called that“

Would you seriously want to be in a relationship with anyone who needed to be told?

SmileEachDay · 10/04/2019 11:43

I’ve had “Miss” a lot. Usually in combination with some sort of innuendo.

I hate it because it implies I’m in some way sexual when teaching which is 🤮 and just horrible.

I tell them once not to do it. Once. Then I get rid if it doesn’t stop.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 10/04/2019 11:55

Urghhhh, these men don't deserve to meet anyone!

CaptainCabinets · 10/04/2019 12:02

I must be strange then because I honestly can’t see the issue.

My friend’s grandad (who has Alzheimer’s) calls me ‘Nursey’, which I find very sweet. Younger men have also called me similar things and made jokes, but I can’t find the energy to get upset about it.

NorthernKnickers · 10/04/2019 18:59

@SmileEachDay...I think that's why I find it irritating/off-putting! The innuendo surrounding it. I've had things like 'hi teach, if they'd looked like you when I was at school, I might not have bunked off as much 😜' and only today, "Will Miss be giving any detentions tonight...count me in!" (I even say, in my profile, that I'm an infant teacher, and teach 5 year olds...so I'd hardly be giving detentions anyway!!)

I'm absolutely certain that if I'd put 'factory worker' on my profile, there would be no mention of my job in any exchanges. Certainly no innuendo at any rate 🤷‍♀️

Seems air hostesses have the same issues:-

Former air-hostess from Bath says she received 'strange' eBay messages asking her to sell her unwashed tights
