Dogs who beg for food when you eat

How999 · 09/04/2019 08:19

My lodger feeds her dog from her own plate, so when the rest of us eat, the dog (naturally I suppose) also begs us for food.

Which I find completely off putting and irritating.

But I have never had a dog, so I don’t know if this is something most dog owners do and don’t mind. Maybe I should chill out?

So those who cant stop the begging so put their dog in a different room whilst eating what do you do when you have snack in the lounge such as popcorn/crisps/chocs with a film for example?

longwayoff · 09/04/2019 11:40

I recall a 'come dine with me' featuring an extremely self-regarding American man with a couple of lanky hounds. Dogs were circling the table trying their luck with all diners, one of whom said 'er, the dogs are begging, can you put them outside?' SNIFF. "MY dogs do NOT beg." Yet they were plainly doing so. Diners quailed and, as far as I recall, they just put up with it. Dreadful habit for dogs. No, he didn't win.

Tell her go to bed and she does.......

AryaStarkWolf · 09/04/2019 11:42

I can stop her begging, that's how, in otherwise

AryaStarkWolf · 09/04/2019 11:43

gamerchick · 09/04/2019 11:44

Who the fuck does this?!?! I've never for the life of me heard of anyone putting dishes back in the cupboard after a dog licks them?!

I have, it still turns my stomach. So therefore I no longer trust dog owners who let them lick the plate. There are some things you can't unsee.

It's right up there with crotch sniffers really isn't it? confused what's this? Does that majorly bother people?

When someone's dog makes a beeline for your fanny and gets its nose right in there? Erm yes it does majorly bother people Hmm

@GreytExpectations I did say “horses for courses”. I’m perfectly within my rights to think dogs licking human plates is yucky.

Tbh unless you boilwash your plates or put Milton sterilising tablets in your dishwasher, you aren’t actually sterilising them. But that’s entirely your choice - as it’s mine to never feed from the table.

powershowerforanhour · 09/04/2019 12:17

Ours is a hideously annoying beggar by nature but has been ruthlessly and consistently instructed "In your bed" when we are cooking or eating so doesn't try very often now, and when she does a short sharp word will send her back to bed which she calmly accepts. If she didn't she'd be banished from the room.

Lllot5 · 09/04/2019 12:30

Everyone should just have cats problem solved. Grin

BlueSlipperSocks · 09/04/2019 12:32

Yeah... because cats are only ever a problem to the neighbours.

How999 · 09/04/2019 12:32

Yes my lodger’s dog has also done this. Luckily only once so far.

The putting her out of the room is difficult because we all eat at such random times.

She also spends a lot of time sniffing around the floor for food.

My lodger says she knows she shouldn’t give her food, but they spent a year living with her sister and her dog, who has much worse habits, and things got bad then. It is generally just her and her dog and they have got used to kind of living in symbiosis and obviously she doesn’t mind her dog’s nose on her as well as being stared at when she eats (because of course she gives her food), but I do think it is kind of gross.

In general though I am glad that both the lodger and the dog are here so ...

And my dd really loves her.

Urgh, don't even get me started on my anger towards cat owners!

Cryalot2 · 09/04/2019 13:31

As an owner of a rather spoilt little dog ( she has gave so much more back)
She is not allowed in the rooms we eat in or food is prepared.
Regularly we have a snack in front of her and yes she does beg. From what I gather this is so common.
We have a two way approach, we tell her "No " in a stern voice , or sometimes we give her a dog treat or bits of chicken into minute pieces put in a ball which takes a few minutes for her to finish and keeps her occupied until we have had ours.
When she sees us coming with our cups, she goes and patiently waits in her spot.

But I would never like a dog near me when I am having other than tea and snack. Never would feed from my plate.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 10/04/2019 13:51

Dogs can learn who is worth pestering and who is not.

DDog doesn't beg from me as I don't feed him if he tries begging, but DGM is incorrigible and always feeds him under the table despite requests not to (I've given up...). As a result he spends most mealtimes when we visit with his little front paws on her chair and his head resting on her lap in a most hopeful manner (she quite likes this). He still knows that it's not worth bothering begging from me!

I do still feed him from the table occasionally, but only when he's being calm, lying on the floor and generally not being a pest - he's being rewarded for not begging.

That said, in your situation tbh I would just put the dog in another room when you're eating.

stucknoue · 10/04/2019 14:15

Mine doesn't approach the table until we finish because he doesn't get scraps until the end, just training

ScreamScreamIceCream · 10/04/2019 14:21

Throughout my life I have had to deal with both dogs and cats begging me for food when I eat. Once lodged in a place where I sat down to eat, both the dogs and one of the cats sat around me begging.

Current cat eyes my plate but doesn't beg me. She's worked out that "I am the buyer of the better cat food" so will only steal from my plate if I'm stupid enough to leave it.

IceIceCoffee · 10/04/2019 14:44

I have large dogs they don’t beg for food if they do attempt it they are sent out the room. Mother in law let’s hers , who snatch food out of people’s hands sit on people’s laps and try and go for the food. It’s awful.

ChuckyHereToPlay · 10/04/2019 15:27

Well they do it because they know they will get food. I've never fed mine scraps and they leave me alone at dinner.

PregnantSea · 10/04/2019 15:33

I hate this. None of my dogs have ever done this. I wasn't even particularly strict with them, I just never fed them off my plate and sent them to bed if they begged. They all learnt very quickly not to bother. It's really not hard, anyone who doesn't do this is either lazy or happy for the dogs to beg.

The dog won't stop begging for your food unless the lodger stops feeding the dog off her plate. All you can do is kick the dog out while you eat.

CapeDaisy5 · 11/04/2019 10:28

Oh. Doesn't bother me. I just bat them away and laugh about it.

CapeDaisy5 · 11/04/2019 10:28

I mean digs greet each other by sniffing privates. It's just a dog thing. Wouldnt think to be bothered about it.

How999 · 11/04/2019 14:09

It makes me think that I must not be clean and that, worse still, other people think this when they see it Blush.

Well I'm not indulgent of rude, badly trained dogs. It's not funny and any owner with one of these animals should probably take note unless they want their dog to risk a punch to the head one day.
