...to think that mass gift-giving to teachers at end of year is tacky?

Do teachers really want 30 packets of Cadbury's Roses, bought because the high-street shops have sented out yet another way to turn genuine sentiment into a tacky marketing opportunity? Or should we just say thanks instead?

Do you buy for the teacher and the teaching assistant?

His 2 teachers I bought for!!

Small present. Only been at present school for 8 weeks so no idea about teaching assistants....

Tortington · 13/07/2007 14:10

its is arse licking of the higestordr.

DollyPopsOut · 13/07/2007 14:20

Am a bit of "what's the worse which can happen if you don't?" and "they will have a different teacher next year". Surely we want to thank them for the herculean efforts this year (assuming that they have made them...)whether or not there are consequences for your child?

I think it is a bit pants not to mark the end of the year in some way, whether in a group or on your own.

mummyrex · 13/07/2007 14:25

Hear hear Pitchounette

Tortington · 13/07/2007 14:27

its another way for the layground mums ( with fuck all ele to do but buy cardigans from boden) play one upmanship.

its not about a nicely drawn card. its about muchmore than that.

it becomes wanky.

noddyholder · 13/07/2007 14:29

MamaGryffindor · 13/07/2007 14:32

so ner

2spells · 13/07/2007 14:36

I will be getting dd's teacher a pressie. she has been brilliant. also the ca's but then as it is a sn school I think they do more than the norm. never did it for ds in mainstrean though.

Scootergrrrl · 13/07/2007 14:37

We're getting DD's pre-school teacher a bottle of wine - she blinking well deserves it after having DD and her best friends blither at her for a whole year! The woman deserves a medal, never mind a bottle of wine

MamaGryffindor · 13/07/2007 14:40

2spells is that you 2shoes?!

I thought about you the other day, I want you to be 2floos
(as in floo network)

TenaLady · 13/07/2007 14:42

I get mine to make his own card and I get a helium balloon from Asda with 'We love our Teachers' on it

RosaLuxembourg · 13/07/2007 14:43

I tend to get the teachers books for their classrooms - usually a set from Bookpeople that I know they don't have. DD1 is making her teacher a necklace this year.

REBELlatrixlestrange · 13/07/2007 14:45

DS3's teacher DESERVES a barrel of wine, let alone a bottle.

Yes, she's paid to teach him, but she's so much more than just a teacher.

2spells · 13/07/2007 14:46

MamaGryffindor yes tis me 2shoes. never heard of a floo network

MamaGryffindor · 13/07/2007 14:46

Have you actually read the HP books my lovely?

snowwonder · 13/07/2007 14:49

my dd loves giving pressies at end of term....

this year she chose a necklace that she said was perfect for her teacher!!!!

to be honest i think they do a fab job and deserve it...

anniebear · 13/07/2007 14:50

Its hard though as last year the Teacher opened all her presents with very excited children all watching

I would have felt awful if mine hadnt got her something!

2spells · 13/07/2007 14:54

no mama I haven't I just see the films. do I have to ask ds to explain......

kickassangel · 13/07/2007 14:55

as a secondary teacher i get almost nothing - as a primary my sister gets LOADS - most of which she gives away as there is only so much choc & soap she needs. yes, it is our job to teach, but enyone who works hard deserves a 'thank you' - if womeone was leaving your work or dept you would acknowledge what they did. it's polite to say thank you, but a card, or verbal thanks is just as appreciated as endless boxes of chocs.

DO feel free not to give a present - the end of the year is the obvious time, but if people remembered to sy thank you as & when the occassion arose (e.g. after nativity play)then you shouldn't feel pressured into doing too much later.

having said that, dd leaves nursery soon, and i've noticed the piles of chocs building up there from other leavers. i am trying to figure out how to express my thanks without getting sucked into the commercial stuff too much - i DID write a very appreciative letter to the owner & will get dd to make cards for her room workers.

Hathor · 13/07/2007 14:55

what Custardo said

MamaGryffindor · 13/07/2007 14:56

Ah, you're the same as my DH

the floo network is where the wizard or witch throws some floo powder into a fireplace, jumps in teh fire and says their destination. They end up in the fireplace of wherever they want to go. Apparently its not a very pleasant way to travel, but its useful if you're going somwhere where you can't apparate

I like the sound of 2floos

Hathor · 13/07/2007 14:57

And what kickass said

2spells · 13/07/2007 14:57

I know it now. yes I like 2floos now
