DH ruining food with dried herbs!

LittleKitty1985 · 08/04/2019 20:48

Yet again DH has ruined a perfectly good meal by covering it in a thick layer of dried herbs! I've been looking forward to this lovely mushroom pasta all day and now it's literally inedible. Why does he do this when he knows I hate it? AIBU to be upset?

Have you asked him not to put herbs on yours clearly? Hinting doesn't work with men. Being very blunt does.

Sculpin · 08/04/2019 20:49

If he knows you hate it then YANBU. What did he say when you told him you were upset?

LittleKitty1985 · 08/04/2019 20:50

Yes he definitely knows!

Put an inch thick layer of salt on his next time you cook. Maybe that will get the message across.

S1naidSucks · 08/04/2019 20:53

He’s an absolute dick! Putting aside the very important fact that you’ve asked him not too, dried herbs are supposed to be added during cooking to release the flavour and soften them. That sounds disgusting.

What did he say when you had a go at him?

1633tonow · 08/04/2019 20:53

Why does he do it? Does he like the taste?

Cambionome · 08/04/2019 20:54

YANBU - dried herbs can be rank.
Will he not listen when you ask him not to put any on your portion?

LittleKitty1985 · 08/04/2019 20:54

He feels bad about it & has offered to make me something else, so it's not like he's a total bastard... it's just really frustrating because he's done this several times in the past so I don't see why he hasn't learned.

& of course I can just eat something else, I'm aware it's a first world problem... but I was looking forward to those mushrooms, sigh!

Why do you even have ingredients you hate in the house?

They need to meet a timely demise.

Or is the the unfortunate sort who will replace?

managedmis · 08/04/2019 20:55

Not the best

He been watching Jamie?

LittleKitty1985 · 08/04/2019 20:55

Why does he do it? Does he like the taste?

Yes, god knows why!

Hide the herbs

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 08/04/2019 20:58

Chuck the mixed herbs out. I did this recently with cumin - can't stand the stuff and partner kept putting it in food so I just threw it away.

enjoyingscience · 08/04/2019 21:00

DH has a terrible mixed herb habit. Makes everything taste like pot pourri.

countrygirl99 · 08/04/2019 21:00

Is it a man thing? I have to pull OH up and reming him that herb use should be subtle not hit you in the face.

TheFutureMrsB · 08/04/2019 21:05

Mine does the same, made a huge vat of broth and then threw in a load of mixed herbs, made the whole pan inedible Angry

MargotLovedTom1 · 08/04/2019 21:08

Couldn't you have scraped them off? Bit late now I guess.

llangennith · 08/04/2019 21:30

I feel your pain!
When my son was 15 or 16 he loved cooking and we'd be salivating in anticipation of what he'd made us: but it was always such a disappointment! He'd use so many herbs and spices that they sort of cancelled each other out and completely masked the taste of the actual ingredients.
As he was still young (and sensitive) we waited for him to learn that less is more.
Your DH is old enough to know better! Tell him to dish up your food first then add all his herbs.

GregoryPeckingDuck · 08/04/2019 21:32

Are you married to a caterpillar? Only rational explanation.

makingmammaries · 08/04/2019 21:34

My ex kept putting fresh chillies in food. I can’t eat them at all. Still get angry when I remember.

Do you use the dried herbs for anything else?
If not, toss them. Problem solved.

Loopytiles · 08/04/2019 21:59

Yuck: sympathy.

greenelephantscarf · 08/04/2019 22:04

dried herbs need to be 'activated' in warm oil to release the flavor. sprinkling herbs on does nothing for flavour

Rememberallball · 08/04/2019 22:07

I had this in a pub on mother’s day - beautiful menu and chose pasta with chicken and bacon in a creamy sauce - only for it to arrive smothered in dried Italian herb mix. It was virtually inedible and I ended up devouring DH’s mashed potato and my garlic bread - lovely carb only menu for dinner!!
