to ask...where do you put your used tampons at home?

Okay, I'll fess up...for years I've flushed them [blush. I've never thought too much about the enivronmental impact as I thought it was the same as loo roll, but have recently become aware that I definitely need to stop.

But I don't like the thought of them lingering around the house. We don't have a bin in the bathroom as it seems disgusting somehow, and our only bin is in the kitchen. It seems beyond skanky to put soiled tampons in there. I just wondered what other women do - do you put them straight in the bins outside, or are you happy to have bloody tampons in the bins inside for days? Not sure if I am being OCD about this (probably), but feel puzzled as to the best way to dispose of them?

I wonder if the people who still flush tampons are the same people as those who pour cooking fat down the sink?

Whatever, I wish they'd stop, because clearing those blockages is hugely expensive and we all bear the cost in our water bills.

Meandmetoo · 07/04/2019 16:08

Those who flush - will be a bit cringe if your drain ever gets clogged and you have to watch someone fish out your used tampons while paying them a few hundred quid for the privilege.

Or, imagine the embarassment of having a blockage on your street and the cause is found to be at your home. I think I that's what the term "die a thousand deaths" was invented for.

Selfish arseholes never change until their actions directly affect them.

Wrap in loo roll and put in bathroom pedal bin. Empty regularly during period. I don’t put cardboard loo rolls on there as they go in the recycling.

Please don’t flush or use plastic bags!

GimmeBread · 07/04/2019 16:08

😂😂😂 @TrendyNorthLondonTeen

PCohle · 07/04/2019 16:09

I flush, but on MN that is akin to admitting that you murder puppies.

ShabbyAbby · 07/04/2019 16:09

Put them in nappy/dog poo bags (two doubled up usually). Then bin them. In the bathroom bin (because that's what it's for) and take it out at least once a day.
I used to wrap them in tissue and pop them in the main bin but after the dog got into the bin, I've been a bit more careful.

I no longer have a dog. I have a toddler though which is almost the same thing.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/04/2019 16:10

To those going on about a bathroom bin, what do you use as a bin liner? Do you use biodegradeable ones or not line the bin? I can't imagine not lining a bin!

JacquesHammer · 07/04/2019 16:11

what do you use as a bin liner?

Nothing. It gets wiped when it’s emptied and then thoroughly washed once a week (the inner bit of the bin comes out so is very easy to do).

GimmeBread · 07/04/2019 16:11

I collect mine for a week in a Tupperware in the fridge the take them to work to dispose in the sanitary bins there.

Doesn't everyone? 😉

Ninkaninus · 07/04/2019 16:11

I just wrap mine in loo roll. I’d bag them if I were depositing them into the kitchen bin because it’s only emptied every few days. But seeing as I never used nappy bags when my children were small and I don’t have a dog so I don’t use doggy poop bags, I think a few extra small bags per month wouldn’t be such a big deal, actually! Smile

Meandmetoo · 07/04/2019 16:12

No one thinks flushing tampons is the same as murdering puppies. Not a single person.

It is a dick move though.

Jinglejanglefish · 07/04/2019 16:13

Wrap in toilet roll and put in the bathroom bin. I'm the only one who uses it and I'm not squeamish in the slightest.

Bringbackthestripes · 07/04/2019 16:13

Not having a bathroom bin is really weird. Used dental floss? Loo roll inners? Shampoo bottles? Used tampons/sanitary towels?

Loo roll tubes and shampoo bottles should be in the recycling.

Get a pedal bin in the bathroom. Stick a liner in it & empty frequently. Stop flushing tampons.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/04/2019 16:14

To be quite honest, I get through so many dog poo bags (albeit biodegradeable) emptying the cat's litter tray that me using a few nappy sacks probably isn't going to make a lot of difference to the environment!

DuesToTheDirt · 07/04/2019 16:15

Bathroom bin, it's blood not nuclear waste.

Especially if you have daughters, do them and their friends a favour and get a bathroom bin. Teenagers are sensitive enough about periods without having to walk round the house with used sanpro wondering where to put it.

Cyborgseadog · 07/04/2019 16:17

I wrap my pads/tampons in toilet tissue and put them in my baby's special nappy bin (it keeps any smells etc. contained).

JaneTheVirgin · 07/04/2019 16:23

Wrap in tissue roll then put in a nappy bag and into bathroom bin.

Those who don't have a bathroom bin, please rethink that if you ever have teenage daughters. My childhood home didn't have one, so whenever I had my period I had to carry sanitary towels downstairs and throw them in the kitchen bin. And there would regularly be uncles/grandparents/brothers in the kitchen at that time which I thought was THE MOST embarrassing thing as a 13year old girl. It gave me such anxiety at the time.

NancyFrank · 07/04/2019 16:25

Stop using tampons and think about re-usable sanitary wear, they're awful for the environment

JacquesHammer · 07/04/2019 16:27

Stop using tampons and think about re-usable sanitary wear, they're awful for the environment

The problem is that I can’t use internal reusables and there’s ONE type of tampon that controls my awful periods. So I have to mitigate my environmental impact in other ways because tampons are non-negotiable right now.

Fundraiser2019 · 07/04/2019 16:28

I wonder if there is a generation of us still flushing Hmm

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/04/2019 16:29

No. I will not stop using tampons. Personally I can't think of anything worse than a cup (well maybe pads) and I will never use one.

AriadneCrete · 07/04/2019 16:29

I wrap them in loo roll and put in the bathroom bin. I don’t understand why a bathroom bin is disgusting. I think it’s even weirder not to have one. I hate staying with people who don’t have bathroom bins.

Smoggle · 07/04/2019 16:30

If you don't have a bathroom bin, what do you expect your guests to do if they have to change a tampon/pad?

AwdBovril · 07/04/2019 16:30

I use a cup & cloth pads these days. However, I always used to wrap tampons in a few squares of loo roll & drop them in the kitchen bin, unless I was about to empty the bathroom bin first.

QueenBeex · 07/04/2019 16:32

I myself flush them, however I am now looking into biodegradable nappy bags to put them in. I have been looking at a mooncup though but I'm just not sure what brand what size etc it all confuses me tbh
