To think that the reason school still haven't given out the reports is so parents don't get a chance to discuss them with the teacher?

School is very good. Ofsted love it. But communications between school and parents isn't good. Style is a bit dictatorial.

Last year reports were given out a week before the end of term with a letter saying that due to the timescale, there was probably no point in discussing them with the class teacher as the children would move class so soon.

Obviously term finishes soon. Still no reports. I assume it is because we are just meant to read them and go 'ok', rather than see them as a was of helping our children?

Is it just me, or is this the school being a pain in the a*se? (and yes I know the teachers have 30 to write, but still....)

Hmm, I was thinking this today as well. Wonder when secondaries generally give their reports out.

In a way I'm not in a hurry as suspect ds's will be full of "could do betters"

REBELlatrixlestrange · 12/07/2007 21:37

Had DS1's report (secondary) in April, and received a brief letter today with his levels.

Our primary have done it differently for the first time this year. Half the school had reports around Easter, with the other half having consults, and then they swapped for this term.

We had DS2's consultation this week and DS3's report. Spoke to DS3's teacher yesterday in passing, and she commented on the report she'd written.

Ours break up next Friday.

elasticbandstand · 12/07/2007 21:41

i find the reports generlaly just say what they have learnt, so non comittall..

LIZS · 12/07/2007 21:42

We never get them before last day of term and this time it will be a further couple fo weeks.

REBELlatrixlestrange · 12/07/2007 21:43

DS3's report is anything but non-committal, lol.

It is positively-framed, but very honest.

Olihan · 12/07/2007 21:44

Dh is a secondary teacher and has to hand his in tomorrow then they'll be printed and sent out next week - he breaks up next Friday.

elasticbandstand · 12/07/2007 21:48

are the sats results back? maybe that is why?
they are delayed?

WendyWeber · 12/07/2007 21:51

DS2 is in Y9 and had his report last week I think (it was delayed due to a computer cockup)

His primary school reports used to be very late though - I suspect for the reason you suggest, katepol. (Head not keen on feedback)

katepol · 12/07/2007 22:09

Ah well, at least I am not alone in this...

DC is in Yr 1, so SATs not relevant here. Head's attitude probably is

Speaking of SATs, anyone know about the predictions that schools can make in Yr 1 for Yr 2 SATs? Are they given to parents?
(I may start a new thread...)

I had my dcs reports last week and had my appointments to discuss them this week.
I am a school governor and was under the impression that this was the norm.
Even though my dc have no problems in school I still would want the opportunity to discuss them and would be very annoyed if I didnt get it.l

debgronow · 12/07/2007 22:16

sorry meant to add.
You have to be given the SAT results for y2 and y6. However they should be available for children in other year groups. I asked for my childrens, I was shown them and was told that they are not offered to parents unless they ask as they would probably not understand them.

elasticbandstand · 12/07/2007 22:18

why on earth wouldnt parents understand?

AttilaTheMum · 12/07/2007 22:30

If they haven't got the SATs results back, they may be waiting so they can send all the reports out on the same day - we only got our English SATs results back yesterday. In fact we sent out the reports with just the Maths & Science SATs, because we do like to give parents a chance to see the teacher if they want to - I don't think 'they are moving soon' is a good reason for not discussing a report - a note of the discussion should be part of the transfer notes for the new class teacher.

Mind you, our photocopier, which we print the reports on, gave up the ghost today - if it had happened last week, then the reports would not have gone out.

cece · 12/07/2007 22:39

Aound here the norm is to give out reports and then have an open evening. So don't get a private meeting but there was a proviso on the letter to say you could make a separate appointment if you wished to discuss any problems arising from the report.

In fact DD got hers today and open evening is on Monday. Break up on Friday.

hana · 12/07/2007 22:42

i don't imagine there is anything sinister in it really
probably more that it's always a rush at the end of the term - there could be one report missing from one subject teacher for whatever reason and this coudl hold things up, or maybe the head hasn't read through them all and rubberstamped them, etc.
so much negativity with regards to teachers at the moment on here

hana · 12/07/2007 22:42

got dd's 2 weeks ago

katepol · 12/07/2007 22:45

Hana, this is infant school, so just one class to write reports for... They are the only written thing parents get on their children all year, so I don't think it is unreasonable to expect them in time to talk about them if needs be...

hana · 12/07/2007 22:47

ok, I"m just giving you some reasons why they are late. things happen. sometimes unexpectedly as well. obvioulsy it would be nice to have them sooner than later, but that didn't happen.

debgronow · 12/07/2007 22:47

elastic.. my thoughts exactly but that is what I was told

Update - today (Fri) we heard that reports will be given on Monday, with the opportunity to talk to teachers in the last week of term. Head noted that this opportunity is rarely taken up and does not expect that parents will need to do so ...

I think we are meant to be grateful that we don't get them on the last day...

REBELlatrixlestrange · 13/07/2007 16:42

My sons' Head's take on things is that the report/consultation should be a bit of an overview of the year.

If there are issues, the teachers should have brought them to the attention of parents way before this stage.

Azure · 13/07/2007 16:58

I'm a bit peeved about this. DS1 broke up from school yesterday and brought home his report. One of the comments from the head is along the lines of "X has had a couple of outbursts recently which may be due to tiredness but I'll be monitoring next year". What outbursts? When? We know nothing about an outburst and now have no opportunity to discuss it. I'm really cross about this now being in black and white. Do you think we should write a letter or email the head?

tigerschick · 13/07/2007 17:00

I think that there is a statutory requirement for schools to provide the opportunity for parents to discuss reports with teachers. It is, however, common practice to make it as awkward as possible - not sure why

I also think that SATs results are predicted in the same way as all other attainments are - children should progress 2 sub-levels each year. So if your child got a 1b in year 1 they should get a 2c in yr2.

Like I say - I'm not certain of any of this but I think it is how I remember it

OrmIrian · 13/07/2007 17:08

We got ours today with a return slip with space for comments. Also an invitation to make an appointment with the teacher if neccessary. Mine were both soooo wonderful this year that I just want to go and see the teachers thank everyone and bawl me eyes out la Paltrow style
