How do you order wine at restaurant?

I've only just started enjoying wine, up till now I've preferred bottle beers or just soft drinks.

What would I say to the waiter/waitress if I saw this on the menu for e.g:

WHITE ZINFANDEL VENDANGE

"Just a small glass of zinfandel, please?" is that right?

I struggle with knowing which main word to say ifykwim

Brancott is lush

Polarbearflavour · 06/04/2019 15:23

I only ever order via the sommelier. Obvs.

PolaDeVeboise · 06/04/2019 15:42

Interesting what a PP said about no-one asking for the wine list in a bar - I ALWAYS do! I'm strictly a Marlborough SB girl, with the occasional Albarino thrown in.

AirBiscuit · 06/04/2019 16:19

@Babyfoal Grin

Clearly the correct thing to say is 'We will have the '45 Mouton en magnum, please'

aweedropofsancerre · 06/04/2019 16:22

PolaDeVeboise same here although I do like a Sancerre too

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 06/04/2019 16:25

I also point or ask for a number.

But the other thing I do if the wine list isn't too long is order by the grape or country. This doesn't work if the wine list runs to several pages, but for a choice of 8 or 10 wines, it's usually fine to say "Please can I have the Chilean?" or "The pinot noir"

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/04/2019 16:29

We got round a extremely expensive wine list dilemma once by ordering the only English wine on the list which happened to be one of about two affordablish wines. We were able to pretend then it was a positive decision we'd made rather than a 'gulp' decision.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 06/04/2019 16:43

Depends where you too. If you are at a very nice restaurant, then ask what they recommend with your food.

mokapot · 06/04/2019 16:55

“Eeeh I’ll ave the babycham “

Verr · 06/04/2019 17:07

What would you say for this?

ROBERTO SAROTTO GAVI DI GAVI

OP posts:
Michaelbaubles · 06/04/2019 17:23

I’d ask for “the Gavi” there, but if you said “the Roberto Sarotto”, you wouldn’t look stupid.

utterflapdoodle · 06/04/2019 17:23

I'd say "I'll have a glass of the Gavi please" assuming there was no other Gavi on the list.

If there was I'd say "I'll have a glass of the Sarotto Gavi".

Italian wine is often named after the grape and the place the wine is from like Brunello di Montalcino or Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. In this case Gavi is both the name of the grape and the place it's from.

Condamine · 06/04/2019 17:25

I'd say, the Gavi please.

Anyone else have a mental image of the OP BELLOWING at the waiter?

Whatad · 06/04/2019 17:29

I point.

SrSteveOskowski · 06/04/2019 18:01

"Can I have a glass of Rioja/Merlot/Malbec please?"

I forgot about the size thing in the UK. I'm in Ireland and wine only comes in one size. A standard glass is 187ml.
