How do you get rid of a fridge?

Long story short, moved into a new property and fridge/freezer is faulty so LLA has agreed to replace.

He’s ordered a new one, due to arrive on Monday.

We’ve paid to get rid of the old one for £30.

Are we supposed to defrost the fridge-freezer?! I’ve never done thus before. Help!

Yes defrost it and give it a quick wipe.

Also only put it outside just before it is collected. The reason for that is if either compartment is big enough for a child to squeeze in they may do that while playing and you will find a dead child.

littledoll33 · 04/04/2019 23:12

Can you upplug it and just leave it in the garden so all the ice can melt?

Not sure what you can do with all your food in the meantime. Do you have a friend or relative who can keep it for you (in their fridge/freezer?)

mrselizabethdarcy · 04/04/2019 23:12

You need to phone the council and they have to dispose of it safely. There is usually a chArge.

MaFleur · 04/04/2019 23:13

If you leave it outside tape it shut. Our council tip takes them too.

mrselizabethdarcy · 04/04/2019 23:13

Sorry....didn't read the OP properly....just ignore me 😃

DontCallMeShitley · 04/04/2019 23:13

You could put it out early but take the doors off for safety.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 04/04/2019 23:14

Scream- how would a child be found dead inside if they crawled in? Surely they could open it from the inside by giving the door a shove?

Redshoeblueshoe · 04/04/2019 23:15

We have the equivalent of a rag and bone man, they take it for free, my local tip also take them, but you would need transport.

CantYouSleepLittleBear · 04/04/2019 23:16

Oh I thought this was going to be a joke/riddle. How disappointing

Good luck with the fridge OP.

@ScreamScreamIceCream - Dead child?! 😱 Your username is eerily apt.

Redshoeblueshoe · 04/04/2019 23:17

Sorry I didn't read properly either.
Defrost

The child in fridge scare was a very real thing in the 70's. They used to have public information announcements about it. That's because the handles used to lock into a receiver. Thankfully they have evolved since then.

happyhillock · 04/04/2019 23:20

You have to call the council they will lift it there's usually a charge, or take it to the local council dump they will tell you where to leave it.

chatnicknameyousuggested · 04/04/2019 23:22

Didn't you see Luther? Please be careful!

Dana28 · 04/04/2019 23:27

Fridges have had to have magnetic doors since the mid 50s!!!

Duoscoo · 04/04/2019 23:29

OMG just to be clear, I’m not disposing a body in the freezer 😱

Thank you for the advice! 😁

Seriously though. This is a genuine question!

What am I supposed to do before they collect the fridge/freezer? Defrost? As in, turn it of at the mains? Clean it before they collect?

BloodsportForAll · 04/04/2019 23:34

No car? It's free to take it to the recycling centre.

Yes, turn off, defrost, dry it.

Redshoeblueshoe · 04/04/2019 23:43

Unplug the bastard Grin

CantYouSleepLittleBear · 04/04/2019 23:54

Presumably if it's being thrown away then there's no need to clean it. Just switch it off at the wall. And be careful if you open the door afterwards because there might be lots of water flooding out especially if you have a freezer compartment.

BlackeyedGruesome · 05/04/2019 00:52

Turn off, old towels on floor to catch meltwater. Open door and allow to defrost. Store your food in someone else's fridge freezer.
