As above really....

GP prescribed antibiotics for this two and a half days ago, area is so swollen and painful I am unable to put head on a pillow, pain is not of this earth....

Any wise folks here have any idea what they might do at A&E if I were to go? Will they be able to stop the pain?

Feel like they need to take a Dyson to my ear but suspect it's going to take far more than this....

My God this hurts

I'm so pleased you've been seen and had the help you need.

I hope you had a much better night last night and you recover quickly now.

Ifartglitterybaubles · 06/04/2019 10:03

For the sporners, the wick is called BIPP - Bismuth Idoforn Parrafin gauze. Its been a while since I did ENT so it may have changed but that is what we packed ears with and indeed noses in the case of Epistaxis.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/04/2019 10:50

How does that work? I thought when noses were packed it was to stop the bleed?

BoobiesToTheRescue · 06/04/2019 12:20

Oh God you poor poor bugger.

I can't imagine how much pain you must have endured. I hope it improves quickly now.

in your FACE seniorcitizern

BoobiesToTheRescue · 06/04/2019 12:22

ifartglitterybauballs I think I've had that after a perforation repair.

@ohyoubadbadkitten it collects the infection in the same way it collects the blood in a nose.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/04/2019 13:31

Cool, thanks Boobie.

I hope you are beginning to feel better doubleshotespresso.

Senior citizen
How is the humble pie?

You read op's update? So, turns out that she was told she should have gone to A and E earlier! Good job she didn't listen to you with your in-depth medical knowledge of NHS targets and definition of the terms accident and emergency.

Op - glad you're on the mend now and hope you can get some sleep. Get well soon.

bellabasset · 06/04/2019 14:44

Severe pain is an emergency surely, especially with the possibility of infection. I am so glad you're sorted felt sorry for you in that pain.

doubleshotespresso · 07/04/2019 10:45

Hello all..... apologies yesterday I took DD to a Birthday party and pretty much collapsed in the evening...

Pain and swelling has vastly improved, the new antibiotics have really had a positive effect and aside from the small hours is mostly manageable.

I do hope Seniorcitizen has read the updates and will refrain from offering such duff and ridiculous advice in the future when somebody else might be discouraged from seeking help.

So glad you are feeling better OP 💐

doubleshotespresso · 07/04/2019 11:43

Do to those spinners asking about the "wick".
This helped to get the steroid drops right into the middle of my ear as it expands , thus distributing the drops at the same time as dragging infection away. Must say a very odd sensation at first but amazingly effective. My ear is no longer glowing red and has gone back down to almost its normal size.

My hearing is somewhat muffled for the time being but overall feeling on the mend just a bit knocked out with all the meds.

sporners not spinners!

Great to hear you’re on the mend Smile
I guess @Seniorcitizen1 must have messaged you privately to apologise for being so wrong? Hmm

GinandGingerBeer · 07/04/2019 11:59

I feel ridiculously relieved on your behalf Smile
So glad you're turning the corner, sounds like it's been hell!

KavvLar · 07/04/2019 12:06

Glad you are feeling better @doubleshotespresso and hope the school meeting went well as well.

azulmariposa · 07/04/2019 12:19

A perforated eardrum does hurt after it's burst!

Unfortunately it hurts for quite some time too!
Codeine was the only the only thing that helped and a hot wheat bag. It leaks for ages too!

longearedbat · 07/04/2019 12:42

Your 'wick' description has me imagining a tampax sticking out of your ear.. sorry!
I had a similar experience some years ago; not as bad as yours, but the pain was indescribable, so you have my sympathy. Prescribed co codamol helped with it. It's a bit alarming when you can hear yourself moaning with pain.
Ever since I have suffered with bppv, which is a form of vertigo caused by crystals in the ear. I always blame the ear infection for causing it, rightly or wrongly.

doubleshotespresso · 07/04/2019 12:55

SauvignonBlanche not as yet I am sure Seniorcitizen1 is very busy trawling the NHS website trying to find some relevant quote to support her utter ill-advised madness. Waiting patiently.....

Kavlar yes the meeting went better than expected thanks! Have been battling since January and finally appear to have agreement to stuff they have been avoiding til now so delighted. I nearly fell out the chair when negotiations ended!

longearedbat it did feel a bit like that but in reality is a teensy little thing which has helped enormously

I'm so glad you got help. I spent 3 days semiconscious in hospital over New year a few years ago with two perforated ear drums. The pain was so bad I was taking the strongest co-codamal, tramadol and double dose ibuprofen ( at Drs request). I was vomiting with pain and screaming so 111 sent a paramedic. I was admitted to A&e given morphine and admitted.
There is ear ache and there is infection and perforation. They are different things! The Drs told me when it gets to that point they are worried about infection spreading to the bone and brain. I hope you are feeling better.

ChuckyHereToPlay · 07/04/2019 14:02

Try to get some different antibiotics. I used to suffer from ear infections and it's the worst pain I've ever had. The first antibiotics did nothing for me but thr next lot helped (can't remember which) and they also gave me an ear spray but it probably can't be used for burst eardrum. Take cocodamol and ibuprofen. Another thing I did was fill a sock with rice and microwave it and rest my head on it.

Steamedbadger · 07/04/2019 16:15

You poor thing. So glad it's starting to improve now.
